@D503 The previous charter act of 1833 had laid down that the Court of Directors should nominate annually 4 times as many candidates as there were vacancies, from whom one should be selected by competitive examination. The charter act of 1833 also provided the Haileybury college of London should make quota to admit the future civil servants. However, this system of an open competition was never effectively operated. A committee under the chairmanship of Lord Macaulay had prepared the regulations in this context. The report said that:
- Haileybury should cease to be maintained as higher education college for the ICS
- There should be a broad general education rather than specialized education for the ICS recruits
- The recruitment should be based upon an open competitive examination to bring out the best candidates and not through mere superficial knowledge
- The appointments should be subject to a period of probation.
- Charter Act of 1853 deprived the Court of Directors of its right of Patronage to Indian appointments and now it was to be exercised under the regulations. This was the Birth of Civil Services which was thrown in 1854 for open competition.
please clarify chronology.. everything is mixed up in ncert
is the mahajanapada age and age of buddha same? also is later vedic age iron age? nbpw is ashoka era or mahajanapada age?
see mahajanpada and buddhism were evolving together and few of them were contemporary of buddha too , its like political changes resulted into mahajanpada rise and socio religious changes resulted into new religion. think of it as rise of second urbanisation in india
so if you ask specific question then will be able to help in this regard. Becoz explaining entire thing will be a huge task :)
Yes later vedic is associated to iron use and iron age evolving
Division of subjects between Centre and Provinces - GOI Act 1919 or 1935 ?
Spectrum refers as 1935 while Forum key refers as 1919.
I think the 1935 one clearly created the three lists, but the jurisdiction of the central and provincial govt. was defined in the 1919 one. So I think if the question asks in a general sense, the answer would be 1919 and if they specifically ask which act created the three lists then it would be 1935.

In 1919, it was based on an executive decision, it was not constitutional. So division of subjects was the decision of the executive, which makes it not so desired option. I think we should go for 1935, because consitutionally it was done at that time, while the idea proposed during 1919.
@AyeRamadhirin spectrum it's given that theoretically 1833 act opened it but practically it didn't happen for long and first Indian civil servant could be appointed only in 1860s after passage of civil services act 1861. So I'm confused.
^from upsc website
I reckon that if the question asks 'When was it first thrown open?' - the ideal answer would be 1833.
I have read somewhere which I can't find now, it said that it was not a federation per se because it was like it happens in UK, its an executive decision, the governor-general w/o any constitutional change might take back the the subjects from the provinces. This could not be done in govt of India act 1935. It was just a division of subjects was specified in the act and it was no federation.

@sstarrr yes but separation of subjects was provided constitutionally. The initial query isn’t on the concept of federalism and how the situation was post GoI Act, 1919. It was in respect of today’s SFG test question where the statement given was: ‘it demarcated and separated the central and provincial subjects’.The overarching powers to the Gov. Gen. were also a constitutional provision. His power to unilaterally change a subject’s category has no bearing on whether overall the subjects were demarcated. The Act itself very clearly makes a distinction between Central subjects and Provincial subjects. What constitutes those subjects was decided based on rules, so an executive decision but again, the question isn’t who or how the subjects were demarcated, just whether separation was provided or not.I think now we’re both aligned. While which subjects were put under which list would be done as per rules provided under the act, the answer for the question whether subjects were divided first under GoI Act 1919 or 1935 would be- 1919
Right. I am not in SFG so I did not know what was asked. I was expecting a question on federation. If it comes to demarcation then of course its 1919.

Also this is a PYQ asked in 2015.
Give suggestions guys, I have tried attempting some of the test. The recent ones. I attempt in the range of 40-45, get somewhere 5-9 incorrect. Score hovers's around 65-75 ( for 50 ques)
I don't know all the stuff, intelligent guessing is working, should I be happy I am scoring or I be sad that I don't know stuff. People who are attempting SFG tell me, do you guys are also making intelligent guessing? or you know everything.
How would you have solved this?

21st question is vague need not worry about it . Even if it comes you can leave
25th groundnut and oil imports are standard ( i believe seeing PYQs even if its not the answer/ its there as options)
using this you can solve (as palm oil is the most ) again general view from survey no such specific thing top 3 of imports we shld see them . Seashum you might not know but since second statement is wrong you arrive to answer
15th : leopard is standard for prep wildlife species eg: lion/cheetah/tiger / one horn rhino/ elephant etc these you can prepare for UPSC . they do ask them
@sstarrr also always see PYQs if the type of question is asked . last 4-5 years you will get to see the pattern they are asking . observe that and stick to your plan . do not panic in such questions . haan but leopard and groundnut one you can prepare and will be beneficial for sure in exam .
crops me : cotton/sugarcane/tea/coffee/wheat/jute/pulses /millets/jowar /apple/banana/groundnut if you prepare it will be helpful in exam either directly or through option elimination
hope this helps

Thank you. Yeah I have made a list of probable's, but you get bouncer.
I solved all of them through some guess and some knowledge :)
