Group for IFos / Forest Service Preparation - Official Thread - Optional, Strategy + Guide

Need suggestion. Can anyone tell me which optional can be completed between CSE mains and forest mains. I have physics background so one optional is sorted(hope so🤣).I have absolutely no idea about the other one.

Go for any popular optional. Forestry seems more like it.

Thank you sir. Everyone is suggesting forestry. Wahi karenge.

There is no problem being a part of the crowd as long as you are a little ahead.

Do well :)

@Neyawn Can you suggest one more(other than forestry) popular optional for engineering background aspirant

Agricultural Engineering ! It’s scoring !

Look for past 4 years all IFoS Rank 1 have been forum guys . All this info has been extracted and beautifully placed here

@Neyawn Can you please guide me on choosing one optional for IFS? I have one optional sorted out but for second optional I am confused between Chemical Engineering and Forestry.
Chemical engineering because I have done my under graduation in it but my concern is its relative performance compared to forestry.

If you are not studying chemical engineering / chemistry  for Civils, why do it for forest ?

Look the trick to crack a competitive exam with a vast syllabus is by making it easier for ourself to do well, and then actually do well. Don’t do things that increase you workload . You will

anyway have plenty to study .

Actually, Chemical engineering is not included in the optional list for civil services. My optional for civil services is Mathematics in which I feel comfortable, so had the doubt regarding other optional for IFS.

I guessed as much. Forestry is much easier to do. Unless you are a genius at those chemical things, KiSS, stick with forestry.

@Neyawn Aye captain! thanks.

Look, you could do a four year degree course in agriculture from PUSA. But in the end, for selection, you will have to compete with Civils people only. They will top the exam anyway.

@Neyawn  I have a doubt.

I gave IFoS mains this year with my optionals as Agriculture and Civil Engg (my graduation subject). It was an ill-thought-out decision since I don't have CE as my optional in CSM & I did not take Forestry as the other paper. In whatever time I had between CSM and IFoSM, I did prepare decent notes of agriculture keeping IFoS in mind . Now for this year, if I take Forestry[as people suggest] as one of the papers, then I can't take Agri on which I have spent a good 20-25 days. What do you suggest? Should I go for Agriculture+Geology or Forestry+Geology?

Thank You.

Look, My knowledge with respect to IFoS is from the eight year history of Forum. Nearly everyone has told me that forestry is good because "you have to do only 1-2 books" and agri engineering because it is scoring. And I have been fed that year after year. Even 2 months back, there is a mentor who cleared IFS was guiding a student, I popped in and asked which optionals are best, she said the same.

Last year the candidate who got Rank 1 ( prolly has Mathematics optional ), but said the same as far as I can remember.

@Neyawn

Can we prefer Agriculture Engineering as an optional over Geology. (with forestry being the other optional. I don't have any background in Agriculture)

People have done that.

& got selected...?

Yes, many. Everytime I have met some from forest, I have asked them the optional question. And eight out of ten times I have got the same reply.

Because of COVID I have not been able to meet many people from last year list. But the year before that, 7 out of top 10 of IFoS  people were in one forum program so I knew them and asked them. I have got the same answer.

Geology people have taken usually when they either had it for Civils or had geography optional. But Agri engineering wins because of Scorability.

Take a look at the ifs guide athttps://blog.ForumIAS.com/ifs

It was written eight years ago, by drsheldon and then edited by a user VIP (dfo of Andaman right now) and last year also when I was working on updating it with current year forum members who cleared the exam , some of the things remained the same. And optional choosing was one of them.

@Neyawn Thanks for the info sir :). I wrote this year IFoS Mains but didn't prepare Geology as I was unable to. Will go through Agriculture Engineering syllabus & above blog based on your response. Do mention if there is anything else regarding this optional.

Please speak to other co aspirants  as well. I am merely passing on what has been consistently said to me through the years.

I have personally been scared of something like agricultural engineering - which I feel

must be having  degree level maths. But the issue is that the people who have recommended it are not IITians . I had a feeling earlier that IIT people had done plus two maths very well and therefore they are saying it’s scoring. But then I did encounter a lot of tier 2 and 3 college students who very confidently said the same.

( My unsaid response : fear has been - to do that subject at least we need to know differentiation integration of plus two level ( my assumption ). )
