For people who could not find their names in the PDF this time, I know how it feels. But it will get better very very soon!

I posted below lines here on Forum after I didn't clear mains last year. Hope it helps.

First, do not think of how you “failed others.” If you’re not fighting the good fight for yourself and yourself only, you’re not fighting for the right reason. Seeking validation from others is a path down self-deception and ignorance. He is most at peace with himself who seeks only his own approval.

Second, focus less on the result and more on the journey. We’re all going to die someday, and we will never receive true validation or a stamp of approval from anyone saying “you lived a good life and fought the good fight”. Only you will ever know that, and you will know it every day that you work hard, live nobly, and walk with grace.

If you really worked hard and still failed, props to you: most people fail because they never try. Life is not about winning or losing, because when we die, the king and the pawn go in the same box. Focus on the here and now, the opportunity to work hard and fight hard today, the opportunity to live nobly and with grace today. By focusing on the now and fighting the good fight knowing you may possibly fail in endeavours and knowing for certain that you’re going to die, you will be always and forever be at peace.

I still have one attempt to go but I don't have the energy and patience to bank on only UPSC since life has been static for 5 years.

What could be the possible backup options? People with similar experiences please help.

Writing 1/2 state civil services exam will diversify the risk. One may get lucky to ensure a seat there. UPPSC conduct exams promptly and could be a good alternative.

Out - Philosophy optional

Hi all.
This is going to be a long post but i hope i can both express myself and others might get some insight.

This has been a long journey for me. Gratuated from IIT Kanpur in 2014 and gave back to back interviews in 2015 and 2016. At that time I didn't do much answer writing and all and still went till interview but couldn't make it to final list due to poor interview scores both times.
Then the heartbreak... couldn't clear 2017 prelims. I remember i was devastated as many of my batchmates cleared by then. The only silver lining was that at the same time I cleared another UPSC Group A exam and joined the central civil services in 2016.
Although i still had the ammunition to continue this journey but the job pressure and few personal aspects could not lead to proper preparation. I remember not being able to get even 1 month leave for the mains exam. All of that made it tougher year by year and i skipped 3 attempts till 2020.
Last year i again started preparation as I got posted in an office where I was relatively free. Since I was out of touch for long, focussed more on finishing the syllabus in 2021 and didn't do much answer writing...failed mains by 60 odd marks.
This year I did a lot of answer writing, scored decently in the test series. I was able to finish all papers and did whatever I thought can be done except that this time too my mains preparation restricted to those last 3 months.
Coming to today, sitting in my office i am thankful that I have job security and that too a decent one. But my ammunition is still intact.
The hard truth is that I need to prepare for the whole year for mains will be working on that.
The message for others is that one should not give more than 3 years (rather 3 mains) exclusively for this exam. It will take huge toll on your mental, physical and emotional health. After 3 mains start working for backup plan too.
Things are not all rosy and good now as they were when I started preparation. There is cut throat preparation and dearth of good and respectable government jobs (take IRMS case).
Give whatever exams you can, it will keep you in the shape. This will give ammo to your soul and to your mind.
Coming to myself, i would continue this journey with more determination and covering things from scratch now. I would have to unlearn to learn again.
God bless you all. Rise and Shine.

Out. Mathematics Optional. Third Attempt, First Mains.

Haven’t felt so low in a long long time. I would always tell myself that prelims was the main hurdle for me but such is the nature of this exam that it humbles you at each step on the way. I know I want to try again, just hope that I have enough fuel left to slog for one more year.

Congratulations to everyone who cleared. It has been great to see fellow travellers finally getting what they’ve been working towards since years. I hope you all live up to your potential and get out of the UPSC chakravyuh. All the best!

The prefrontal cortex which is a part of the frontal lobe of the cerebrum as anyone knows houses the short term memories for duration upto 7 to 8 minutes. While this is important for new material to get absorbed bit by bit but more important for long term memory storage is the role of the hippocampus situated in the temporal lobe of the cerebrum. Don't ignore also the centrality of Brocka's area in the frontal lobe as also Wernicke's area based in the temporal lobe which collectively pertain to language process and linguistics skills. In my humble opinion, overuse of prefrontal cortex can do wonders for the aspirant in the prelims but the dynamic role of the Hippocampus/Temporal lobe would be more related to finding oneself successful in the narrow scheme of things that the CSE is.

Another rant and regret that I wanted to just share.

Grab a plan B whenever you get one.

This year in June I got into XLRI's Delhi campus MBA program despite a 4 year gap.It was really unexpected. But at the same time I had cleared prelims for the first time and in order to prepare for mains I dropped that option :')

And today failing at mains I feel probably I should have taken it up.

I don't know if that decision was right or wrong , don't know if that was meant to be or not , don't know whether it was a stupid decision or not but somewhere the mains failure made me regret that decision. So choose wisely folks :)

What was ur correct attempt for maths optional brother ?

330 correct and 80+ partially correct.

Maths was average for me. GS essay went well. That might have made the difference

Hi, can you please tell me how did you improve for your Mains year-on-year , It's being very difficult to know where did things go wrong in GS. Matlab almost answered all questions -atleast relevant to most questions !
But still was out

After 2nd attempt

Here I realised my basics were poor. So immediately joined Dipin sir classes. I also watched Vision classes on Society, Social Justice, Governance as well as Atish Mathur polity crash course.

Watched Neyawn's Answer Writing session too. Made a checklist based on whatever he said and then after my tests, reviewed my answers to see if majority of the things were implemented.

Due to all this, score increased from 331 to 376.

After 3rd attempt

By now my basics were clear so focussed on making specific improvements.

1) Toppers Copies proved to be the best source for analysis.

Compared Shruti Sharma's papers with mine, since we'd both written Forum ke tests in 2021 and hence attempted the same questions. Through this I figured where I was using unnecessary words, where I was not meeting demand of the questions, how to do proper spacing and structuring etc.

Further, you can figure out what extra to prepare based on topper copies. So for instance, Shruti had made a map of famous Bhakti saints. Iske basis pe I also prepared history/art and culture maps. Ended up using a couple in the final exam.

2) Another thing that really helped was having a mentor (Navya ma'am at Forum). After every test I'd show her my copy. We discussed overall strategy (eg. which areas to focus on) as well as specific tips (eg. how to do value addition in certain types of questions).
