This is for those of you who are planning to write Mains 2020 ( subject to prelims happening ) and we clearing it. Nevertheless, in this time of lull, I am iniviting all people to come up with Mains related study material and Daily Q & A. I will be regular with the newspaper, my self and try to post questions. Anyone else interested, please contribute!
Let us have separate thread for GS Paper 4 & Essay as GS 2 and 3 are largely from current, and we can pool lot of questions.
If @root can help to pin it up, then we can begin with a small group.
Will help in daily accountability.
#2 Write a critical note on challenges to Self-reliance in the context of India's economy. In an attempt to work on the famous saying of Winston Churchill "never let a good crisis go to waste", India has embarked upon a bold program of Self-reliance in the midst of Covid-19. The program is named 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan'.
Components of Self-reliance -
Economy, Infrastructure, Systems, Demography, Demand
Challenges in achieving Self-reliance -
1. Economic challenges - land acquisition, complex and rigid labor laws, low investment in R&D, lack of innovation and push towards entrepreneurship
2. Infra challenges - lack of forward and backward linkages for the industry, investment, technology
3. Systemic challenges - tax structure, financial system, supply chains, technology access and use, governance-related red-tapism and complex law structure, financial literacy
4. Demographic challenges - low employability, lack of skills, quickly rushing through the golden period of demographic dividend
5. Demand related challenges - As per Household Consumer Expenditure in India Survey conducted by NSO -consumer spending has declined for the first time in four decades in 2017-18
A clear path to work on aspects related to land, labor, liquidity, and laws will prove to be a big boost to attract investment and serve as a strong foundation of our Make In India program. Promoting local will help revive the demand that will eventually help achieve a Self-reliant India.
I think someone is deleting my comments. Anyway, this is a little off the mark. There are inherent challenges to Self Reliance. 4 Areas Primarily - Energy Security, Defence Procurement, Forex Reserves, and a few more.
Just suggestions. It was covered in Hindu Article 2 days back.
Hey, thanks for the feedback@goldberry. I did not stick to the challenges specifically related to the economy of the country. I'll work on it and also check out the article.
Hey, Just adding inputs as per Dipin Sir, there is a lot of editorial content on this topic and most of them have argued about structural issues on self reliance. I am not talking only economy here. Defense , Oil, and practicaly everything that we import is a challenge to our self reliance.
Hey Anjali....I have seen you scoring well in MGP mains program. c batch 2020..I need to know your approach on mains test paper ..just i need your MGP copies
Hi@1vipin I think you are mistaken. Am not in batch c :)
Sorry I was a little away. Can we revive this and fix a schedule?
A suggestion- Rather than dealing with questions which are of UPSC standard (slightly complex), we should begin with simple questions.
Explanation- To tackle complex question, we require information. I feel aggregation of information maybe lacking in many due to 3-4 months of prelims preparation and hence being out of touch of mains information collection.
To remedy this, if we begin with simple questions it’ll serve as good information gathering exercise and a stepping stone to get back answer solving capability.
Eg- Enumerate the measures announced for Agriculture under AtmaNirbhar Bharat, and analyse it’s impact on the sector.
The above question is very simple->list the measures and do a basic analysis. It’ll help in making notes in a complied form, and get the habit of answer writing. And in the end, if you have all information with you, it’s all about moulding it in the examination hall to meet the demand of the question.
@rashiv Agreed.
@Mayashura Please provide a reference article also for anwering questions.!
It is quite saddening to see how one thread which is totally for speculation purpose is so active and the other thread which enables one to learn so much, to showcase their Kalam(pen) prowess, to flaunt their writing skills is dead AF.
IMO, whosoever posts a question on this thread must share their written answers as well. Points can be provided only if there is a paucity of time, for example those who suck at Prelims and are utilising the given grace period for improvisation but also want to do some answer writing practice side by side.(in short, mai apni baat kar raha hu)
P.S.- Girls and Bhaiyo, answers likho. Ache khaase mahaarathi iss community ka hissa hai. Iss UPSC journey ko two-way process banao, kuch seekho, kuch sikhao.
Mains ke marks hi hai jo desired rank/service dilaegi sabko. Quest vaale cheetah log pata Nahi kaha hai? Avengers vaali pukaar lagaani padegi lagta hai!
Quest waalo... assemble!!!!!! :P
Post the bakar, here is one question for practice:-
Q. “Account for some key critical vulnerabilities of Indian Society that COVID 19 pandemic has exposed.”
Source-InsightsonIndia
Here is my answer. Please review it and provide feedback/suggestions/improvements. Thanks!
Good comprehensive answer. Only suggestion->cut down on words used to explain your points
My pointers
1. Introduction- Every crisis exposes and highlights the hidden vulnerabilities of a society. The Covid pandemic has done the same for Indian society.
2. Vulnerabilities of India
a. Political- issues pertaining to fiscal federalism. Eg State’s financial position impacting their ability to fight Covid
a. Urban planning- Major metropolitan cities are worst impacted + slum model of living showed its perils with high corona cases. Eg Dharavi
b. Social- migrant crisis exposed the issues surrounding internal migrants having low social protection and political priority
c. Cultural- few instances of prioritising religious gathering over following norms of social distancing
d. Health- tertiary capability in form of shortage of ICU bed & ventilator, and, primary health centre weakness
3. Positive highlights
a. Political- strength of Indian federalism as seen in constant cooperation between all units of Indian federalism
b. Mobility- railways and airline sector showed maturity via Shramik trains and Vande Bharat mission
c. Cultural- Culture of Indian society to come together in times of crisis. Eg Voluntary work by NGO, donation by individuals
d. Economic- adaptable as seen in the swift rise in production scale and capability of PPE, masks etc
e. Health- role of pharma capability seen in HCQ availability and the key role played by Asha & Anganwadi workers.
3. Conclusion- In light of PM’s message of turning this crisis as an opportunity, the need is to usher steps for fiscal autonomy for local government, focus on smart villages and scaling up capability of health sector.
Can anyone please point out to reasons why sex ratio is so poor in states of Haryana and Punjab?
@Yo_Yo_Choti_Singh Sir any pointers?
Which source you are referring for gs2 static part
Apart from laxmikanth?
Is vam of vision good?
Vam+vision test series?
The best way to handle GS papers of mains is to breakdown topics of the syllabus and searching each topic on the net. This will give you a holistic idea of the topic i.e. both static and current perspectives and also you will have original points of your own rather than copy-pasting work which most of the candidates do. You should maintain notes on it with subsequent addition - deletion in due course of time.
Value-added material or any other class notes shall be used only as an option of last resort and not as a study material to begin with.

@Yo_Yo_Choti_Singh Sir any pointers?
Many pointers can be given here.
1) Sanskritization - it's a process whereby lower rung of society tries to emulate practices of the higher rung.
2) Patriarchal Society
3) Reproductive Choices - i.e Presence of sex determination technology is misused for killing the female fetus.
4) Misuse of Modern Science - i.e. abortion has to be used in rare situations and not as a weapon against females.
5) Societal Pressure - society looks down girl chile as a burden due to lack of sanitation facilities, dowry, etc.
6) Breakdown or lethargy of Administration - to work at the village level to prevent this malpractice.
7) Traditional Institutions - like Khap Panchayat which shields this malpractice from the law and order agencies.
8) Unethical Conduct - by medical professionals who have made it abortion as a business at the local level.
