LIVE Session onStrategic Mistakes and Handling Tricky Questions

LIVE Session for filling up DAF 2 | CSE 2020

Hello All,

So the last time I create a TG for Interview prep we saw some good discussions. However, the group has little archival value, by which I means discussions that happen are not archived on the Internet forever - which is something we need for Civils prep - or at least for the community.

This thread is created by ME circa 2021 to be "The Interview Group"

I am also working on a guide for Interview Preparation - which is kinda here

And a very interesting hobby discussion thread here

Why would you like to do this ?

Even I saw in few of the mocks where the panel asks to- 'comment on the role ( practically speaking) you'd likely play in your first and subsequent postings.'------->for different services.

I'm not sure whether UPSC panel asks this question.

I have not come across the board grilling people on the posts that they get across various services.

It's comforting to know the board does not grill over this thing. I am just preparing the hierarchy and their broad roles.

Go through transcripts, you will get a fair idea of the type of questions. It is true that some questions completely catch you off guard and require presence of mind.

@Neyawn a friend wants to write "learning  bharatnatyam" in  her extracurriculars column. She has been taking formal lessons since Jan 2021. Is it too short a time to mention? Your take?

She has seen people writing learning ..( something, something) in their daf but not sure about the learning period. Please throw some light!

You may put that. Prepare well. Remember there could be lady member who would have done that when she was your friends age and then has done / watched / observed it for 30 more years.

Alright, so I don’t want to be the person who writes everything he hears in the forum, but I always ask people what worked for them.

And because this thread is meant for that.

So there is this student who got 190+ in the interview ( Bassi Sir board ) last year and we just spoke and I asked her the cliched question ( which I am going to ask all of you here when you get 190-200+ marks )

What worked for you

She said unambiguously

  1. I was very direct
  2. I did say No to a few questions
  3. I did not beat around the push
  4. I tried to stay cheerful : happy throughout the interview
  5. At the time of the interview , I felt it wasn’t going so good ( but didn’t Panick and pass judgement on myself during that interview - she didn’t say this, but said that I stayed happy till the end )

I remembered her because she had “boxfit” in her hobby section.

Point 5 was exactly my feeling, along with a mix of other points. Same board last year - 187. Commented because first time I observed a pattern.

Hahaha not at all; actually just a bit more enlightened about the process. So, thank you!

@Neyawn

same here. Bassi board- CSM 2018, scored 185.

I couldn't even answer a few basic questions from my post grad subject. But i kept my calm. Also on some environmental issues, i spoke my mind and didn't give any diplomatic answer.

And overall a positive attitude.

@Neyawn How to deal with the nervousness of the sinking feeling of talking to a panel with all so experienced members? I am facing this issue of difficulty in speaking well what I think. I come up with all creative and artsy things when I think but it all flys somewhere when I start speaking.

Mirror is not working well.

P. S. Never faced an interview before. It is very intimidating.

When the result comes, take several mocks and get used to it. The anxiety will go away to some extent. Do not take the feedback from more than one or two places. Just use the mocks for question collection.

Also please write down answers to questions. Questions and answers which can be predicted, must be prepared beforehand.

You will develop clarity in thinking over a period of time. Or else in absence of written down things, you may not be able to track progress .

And don’t speak what you have written, write what you will speak

( This is for those kids who say that writing down things makes it look like mugging up things )

What was her profile like? College, academics, extra curricular, age , attempts etc. Ive heard bassi screws with older 25+ players.

Im facing similar issue. Root cause ive traced to me being alone. Im doing 2 3 things. Watch deabtes and podcasts and mock interviews. Be fully focussed and try to contribute to the conversation by speaking. Also talk to parents or friends on any one topic like home state in great depth. Then later i feel 1 2 mocks will loosen up any hesitations and fears.
