Was away from forum due to multiple reasons and just came back to read the recent messages of this thread. Found out similar things going on with others too. Wishing wellbeing, both mental and physical for all of us. Just writing to put out there that if someone in the community is not able to get any medical consultation due to restrictions or needs a second opinion on any loved ones covid situation, please let me know. I am a medical graduate currently preparing full time and may be able to help. Obviously not an alternative to in person consultation with an experienced doctor. Take care. Waheguru mehar kare. :)

3 years into this prep,I have realized upsc has become a business where almost everyone clearing the exam is writing books.A person scoring average marks in 2017 in ethics is writing ethics books.

That is the reason we get questions like customs,11,12 or rock cut in pap1 which require on the spot thinking and linking of several topics not found in a single book.

Same was the case with 3,6,8(called for linking digitalization with e gov),11,functionality,rajya sabha, quad which often requires us to justify things opposite to what we read in news and books.

Even in pap 3,question 1,5,6,11,14,ncap often need on the spot thinking.Almost entire pap 4 required on the spot thinking.

Even in my optional in pap 2 books werent of much help and things required an overall observation of surroundings.

I belive with more and more books and author coming, impprtance of books would reduce even further.UPSC will always be 1 step ahead of us and authors and over the years would devise such papers which would need a well learned person who can think on the spot in the exam and has understanding of things beyond books.

This is what I feel and believe would be the norm of future upsc exams

It is on spot thinking for some, while it is absurdity to others.

UPSC is not one step ahead of others. UPSC is so far ahead that it risks a candidates future through its absurd questions.(especially ethics)

@SunnyParashar in this pursuit of on the spot thinking, subjectivity has increased like anything. especially going by this years mains result i totally agree.

@mahi2501 Those who clear would believe that it is a progressive step without realizing that they may fail the next mains with this much of subjectivity involved. Those who fail would anyway be branded as losers and their complaints would be considered a case of sour grapes. The process is indeed unfair (I mean involves luck) at so many levels but such is life. The innocent new comers don't realize the vicious nature of this cycle and are fooled by coaching institutes and those who get lucky in their first attempt. But I don't think we can do anything about it. We have to just take our chances and move on if it doesn't work out.
P.S. Cleared mains this year after failing last year.
