CSE 2021: Plan / Strategy / Daily Routine

Hello 2021 aspirants. I thought it would be nice if we can share what we are doing and intend to do with one another here.

This could be a thread for discussing everything prep for 2021.

No one method fits all but to see the plans and progress made by fellow aspirants might help with the finer details of preparation and also keep one on track.

Has anyone of you ever faced extreme unease with essay writing? Problems like

1) Not being sure about the demand of the question, I am always doubtful of my interpretation of the essay(I know there can be multiple interpretations but still)

2) Going blank in between

3) Losing interest midway- feeling like I am already doomed, it is a worthless exercise (seriously)

So if anyone of you has the slightest idea about these problems/possible solutions then, please help out

@PhilOchs I think the problem you face is primarily the first one. Once you gain confidence that your interpretation is correct you won't be clueless nor will you  feel like leaving the essay mid-way.

I think best way to go about it would be to start with a framework of the essay. Take a topic and sit with it for half an hour. Do targeted brainstorming, break the topic and think what you can write as an introduction, the heading you may put, what all points you can write under that heading, examples that can be included etc. Just a framework basically.

If there is someone you can discuss this with and who can guide you, it will be helpful. However if you don't have any such person, pick up topics from insightias weekly challenge and then watch the video of the topic on YouTube.

Once you do this for 5-7 essays you will know what to write, it will build your confidence and then you can practice writing essays every week. If you are writing mains this year, you probably won't have time to practice essay now but in any case you should do the bare minimum.

Devote more time for brainstorming. Keep going back to your brainstorming sheet if u think u are deviating from the topic..

Brainstorm both essays separately.. This will bring freshness.

And i dont see the point in feeling doomed.. Essay is the first paper... You have 8 papers more to give after that... The worst thing you can do to urself is to think that u are doomed while actually writing the exam.. The time for thinking all this is post 16 january.. Not in between.

Thanks guys
I have very slow writing speed(like Yo Yo Bhai) so I try to brainstorm in 15-20 minutes and also waste some minutes of this time panicking about not being able to finish the essay.
I have also felt that when I write faster in one go without interruptions I am actually writing better, thus idea of devoting more time to brainstorming would make it easier. So better brainstorming + writing in one go would be best for me, will try it out next week.
How much time do you give to brainstorming? In brainstorming do you just note down ideas or structure them properly? Sorry for such trivial questions... Writing second mains but still clueless about essays due to fear+lack of guidance(Ideally essay and ethics should be the best bulwark of our anti-coaching front but they have become the most daunting part)

I missed out on a few days of studies due to sickness. So I really need to make the most of these remaining 10 days to cover up for that. Will be posting daily targets to amp up the pressure.

Targets for today:

1) Must Do

a) Solve 2 maths mocks (including extra questions)

b) Essay brainstorm 4 topics

2) Do if time permits

a) 30 minutes for data revision / short notes

b) Revise one 2020 maths mock

Ethics 2020

Q-7

1. What % of answer space should be given to (a)

2. In (b), 'discuss the options' means?

    - Do we have to list down merits/demerits of each possible options as well?

    - Do we have to choose our course of action?

They'd given this directive in Q10 where specifically CoA was asked.

Hello,

This is not a writing problem. This is a thinking problem. You tend to get distracted. Stop judging yourself, and if you are NOT writing the Mains this year, try writing some essays without conforming to the UPSC demand. Write a 2 page 3 page 4 page essay.

You will have to love essay writing, and then adapt to the demand of the commission instead of beginning with it.

Thanks for the reply. For now, I hope giving more time to brainstorming will help resolve the thinking problem as I will be more confident about the structure+content. Also, less likelihood of getting distracted as writing time will be reduced.

what are the chances of mains postponement?

ZERO chances...

Logically speaking it will still take some time for omicron to spread like wildfire (let's hope it doesn't)

Logistically speaking less than 10K people are writing mains.. There are many centres and it would be relatively easy to maintain social distancing in seating arrangement and all...

Long story short... Don't think about all this..

If you are writing mains this year, do ur duty and studyyy.....

@. Would I be penalised for using '&' instead of writing 'and'. I am consciously trying to reduce using '&' but at times I end up using it in flow?
