[Results] Prelims 2020 Over - Gearing for 2021

Because of the corona virus issue? If it does not happen then worst affected will be people whose interview is stuck, around 600-700 such people I think are yet to appear for their interview.

@neyawn sir and others, what is your take?

This is the official Thread for discussion of Prelims Postponement, Please do not create new threads for the same.

Based on my analysis of how they frame questions from PYQs and options, i would suggest everyone to look upamir khusrauand prepare factual pointers.

#1.Khusrauquestion has been asked thrice; but it dates back toearly 2000s and late 90s.

#2. More importantly,Khusrauhas been mentioned inAugust Yojana Magazine(along withkalarippayattuof course)

Not trying to outthink UPSC ! Just agut feeling.

In Vision FLT test 30 & 31, I got 77 and 75 respectively and that has really drained me. Are the pattern of UPSC questions similar to it?

@AureliusM going by the standard of mocks this year, if you're doing badly in FLTs it's probably a good sign :^)

I would like to share my knowledge about prelim stage, having given 4 attempts so far, I have figured out few things.

1. Cutoff in the past 4 years has been less than the marks which one can obtain from easier questions.

2. Coaching mocks actually are not at all relevant these days. They were not relevant earlier as well, the only mock which should be solved is last 25 years question papers, but it has to be done diligently.

3. There is a lot of misinformation about prelims, actually it is not that difficult to crack. It's more a game of nerves rather knowledge. Last year many questions could be solved through elimination actually. For instance the question on maternity act. Had upsc wanted to they would have made options difficult but they don't do such things. They are not coaching mocks!! The only common sense expected of you was to just think, that if a woman visits creche 6 times during a days working hour, what would be her productivity?that ways you can get your answer. There were many such questions.

4. Be convinced that you will absolutely not know answers to 15 questions and we should respect this fact. It is very much possible to clear cutoff by attempting 85 questions. I have done it thrice.

5. Now onwards stop solving any such open mocks, these mocks makes questions on exceptions and upsc is not like that.

6. Just go through your current affairs daily, atleast revise 3 modules in a day. Take up one static subject try to finish it in one day. You don't need to get into details of everything. Just try getting an idea.

7. Regarding polity and history, a lot of time need not be put into preparation now, just focus on topics asked in previous year questions. Do only those topics.

8. If you can manage try reading lucent atleast once just glance through it. You will be surprised to find a lot of questions actually comes from it. For instance when everyone were hairsplitting over future buddha question, I could mark it within seconds as I read it clearly in lucent. So you may find such topics.

9. Just trust yourselves at this point of time. Its important to be calm and start believing in your gut feeling from now on. If you respect your gut feeling, it will pay you in the exam while doing 50/50 questions.

@Rambo93

Earlier i decided to read only Lucent for ancient and medevial but couldn't do that due to time

How  many pages are there for a&m ? Is it possible to do it now?

@Raillife bhai...The SEARCH option of examrobot is the real deal. And it has to be used very judiciously or else you will lose track of time and miss out on your targets.
So Suppose, I am preparing selected topics from Ancient history. Let's say BUDDHISM. So in the SEARCH/ANALYSIS  tab, you can type key words like, "BUDDHA, BUDDHISM, MAHAYANA, HINAYANA, AJANTA, ELLORA" etc etc...!

Now this is where examrobot is simply brilliant. The software will show every question (asked in CSE, CDS, CAPF, SSC, NDA) and you can practice those questions. If you want to keep it simple, you can select the appropriate filter and practice only CSE questions.

How will this benefit you ?
1. You perfect elimination techniques as these are authentic UPSC designed questions and not some random test where you are abhyaasing or insighting.

2. The questions tell you the basic width within which you have to study and help you set a ceiling going beyond which is counter productive.

3. There is a very high probability that you will get 3-4 questions in the CSE paper, directly linked to questions from CAPF,IES, CDS and NDA.

4. Options Analysis.
Many a times, we get flummoxed as to where did UPSC pick a certain question from ? Well You will be surprised how many times the question that is asked was simply the option in one of the previous year papers. And then once you start devouring (strategically of course) the options given in question paper, you will increase your chances of qualifying.

5. Confidence
When you get those UPSC level questions ( from various exams ) right, poor or below average scores in mocks cannot discourage you anymore. You will develop a steely resilience and an amazing defense mechanism. You can keep telling yourself, that come the D-Day, i will be ready !

Of course Tests are important. But solving tests beyond a point is counterproductive IMO. And solving tests without mastering PYQs is even more dangerous.

That in a nutshell is examrobot's utility for you :relieved:

@Sherkhan1428 do you google the options and learn more or is there any other strat that you use?

8.8k views

Yes bhai ! Exactly ! I google the options and more often than not, read up Wikipedia or some other authentic source.

For example : in 2015, there were two options which contained names of SAROJINI NAIDU and BABRUDIIN TAYABJI ! After solving it, you can't simply proceed to the next question assuming that "maine sahi kar diya, to mera ho gaya". You would be well advised to then go to the Wikipedia page of both these leaders, skim read and collect factual info. Following was the question :

And then following is my "ANALYSIS/NOTES" of the options !

Research onSAROJINI NAIDU :

Research onBABRUDDIN TAYABJI :

Only after doing this, Your PYQ analysis is complete IMO. Of course this is tedious and can drain you. But the ROI is very high. These days they have started probing us on leaders and their personal exploits- something you won't find in standard books. For example that "this person stayed in america; wrote biography of mazzini etc" (2018) question where LALA lajpat Rai was the answer.

And this of course is just one example. I can show you 10 more. But i hope you are getting the gist.

 I hope this helps :)
