[Results] Prelims 2020 Over - Gearing for 2021

Because of the corona virus issue? If it does not happen then worst affected will be people whose interview is stuck, around 600-700 such people I think are yet to appear for their interview.

@neyawn sir and others, what is your take?

This is the official Thread for discussion of Prelims Postponement, Please do not create new threads for the same.

@thepolicydreamer Hey, sorry for the late response.

Disclaimer:I don't, by any stretch of imagination, claim to be an expert at this, but I'll share what I think went well for metoday.

Most importantly,I think what worked for me was staying calm throughout the exam. Had Set C. All the fuckall questions were loaded up front. I went through the first 20, marked only 4. Realised the same thing had happened in 2018 prelims. On analysis of PYQs of 2018 and 19, I had realised that it's impossible to make an assessment of the paper right then and there at the exam center. Those papers always seemed much easier in retrospect. With better application of mind, and in a calmer environment, I had found many questions which I wasted in both 2018 and 2019. Had read@Neyawn'spost as well, which said that it is impossible to make an assessment of whether the paper was tough or easy at the exam center. I stayed calm, and went question by question.

I finished with 55 questions in the first round. From experience, I knew that the luck based ones won't be the ones I rue, but the ones from the basics. So, I left even those which were bread and butter questions on which I had a little bit of doubt(Ulgulan)for later. I would remember them on the second reading probably. Last 20 questions were from Polity/MPLADS etc, and very easy. Under2 coalition and all could be done because "2 degree C" is the goal under Paris Agreement. So, I was pretty confident I got the entire last 20. That boosted my confidence.

Went back to the remaining 45. Did around 35 using logic. Such asQ. 28.Rural Road construction question. I knew Geotextiles could be used. So, I eliminated options C and D. Between Options A and B, I made a guesstimate that both Cold Mix Asphalt Technology and Hot mix Asphalt Technology probably won't work. That would be random. Copper slag sounded more reasonable. Went with Option A. SimilarlyQ. 11.Ghantasala, Kadura, Chaul. If they werecapitals of powerful kingdoms, would've come up in reading. If they were places ofexquisite stone art and architecture, again would've come up since we read like a fuck lot. Important Buddhist pilgrimage centres, probably not, because thrust was on Hinduism in Gupta era. Went with Option A.Q. 3as well on Ocean Mean Temperature. First statement, I eliminated by thinking 129 meters deep won't be 26 degree C isotherm. Seemed blatantly wrong to my geography novice eyes. Second statement seemed correct because it speaks of estimating Monsoon. Obviously this would be before Monsoon in June.Q.1.Statement 2 seemed like the odd one out. Eliminating any one option would lead anyone to the answer, and the most plausible statment was statement 2.

A few went wrong, such asQ. 26,steel slag. My logic was steel slag would have metallic impurities, hence why would someone use it in agri. Well, turns out I was wrong, and people do all sorts of random shit. You win some, you lose some. You take the bounty anyway.

Ultimately ended up at 97 questions. Scoring anywhere between 115-125. At the end of the day,I think the only difference from the last two times is that I made 6-8 less blunders than the previous 2 occasions.I didn't make them because I focused on my static books and went over and beyond them in certain topics like Buddhism/Jainism, etc (Q. on Paramitas). I focused on my concepts in Econ. My background in the banking sector helped. I memorised the basics, like G20 countries. Worked on Maps and important seas.(Q. 38)

I think we need to diversify our sources.A liberal reading of the internet on focus areas help. The PT365s of the world don't work anymore. Even the test series. That is just how it is.As@Neyawn said, we can only maximise our chances in this exam. I tried to do that in my own way, focused on what I thought was important, and that helped me ensure I didn't waste the bread and butter questions like I had the last 2 times.

Of course luck favoured me today. On another day, any of my guesses might have gone wrong. I'll be the last one to say one can prepare for this and be sure of it. I think I'll clear prelims this time, but I do not claim to have cracked the code of clearing prelims. These things worked for me this year.Staying calm and maintaining a positive attitude no matter the odds, not putting too much pressure on myself, and not following the herd seem to have worked for me this time.

I've been where you are, and can empathise with what you are going through. Just know that it's not all bad as it may seem right now, and that tomorrow is a new day. No point living for one special day of the year. Dust yourself off, and focus on the shit you need to do when you can get yourself up to do it. :)

Aapka kon sa attempt tha ye??

Regarding the AI question

see landscape of human competence diagram here - https://frankdiana.net/2018/07/12/life-3-0-being-human-in-the-age-of-artificial-intelligence/

Lines from Life 3.0

Book writing is one of the tallest peaks there is. I don't think AI is capable of creating meaningful short stories or songs yet.

I know it may sound weird but I just won a bet with my friend. I had been eating her head since last year saying LaxmiKanth is irrelevant for qualifying prelims but she was like no no-no. Today final, when three years in a row it has been proven that polity can be done with NCERT's only, I feel vindicated! :P
I know I am pretty self-absorbed but yeah! XDDD

Which NCERTS? Specifics Please. Thanks in Advance.

Democratic Politics 1 and 2. these are for class 9th and 10th. Then, Indian constitution at work and political theory. These are for class XI.  These are absolute must, but if you ask me you should do 6-8th too for complete understanding!
You can actually go and check in te books. 80-90% questions are from here only.

@Pantheon For Maths, pretty decent. For English, not at all. They cannot get CAT verbal right which is way more logical and coherent. CSAT english is just vague and depends on what the question setter thought while making the question.

What exactly is non financial debt?

I've marked T bills thinking it's govt debt and not of of financial banking institutions

@Equalizer  It is very much possible. I am myself an AI programmer.
What you need is just meta  Data tags , Neural logic and Plumbing code and .. wham. Even I can make such an application proof of concept in one month. No big deal.

But, How can you transfer Electrons wave in air? wireless transmission of electricity... It was one of Tesla's experiments. But, Till now No Theory of electrical science, magnetics, or say physics exists for such a successful transfer. .... And we all know it.

Also, Ipad wireless charging is due to Electo magnetic induction... when you put two sheets joined and pass the emf ..induced. No big deal done by apple. Because ... Faraday law of emf exists since years.  That is charging without wire. ... not exactly wireless. Because ... In general parley,. wireless word actually refers .. transfer in something like air as medium.

And ... UPSC thinks general .. in common language.
2019 Key is out... It had min 6 different answer from all keys. importantly, 7 different from shankar and 11 different from Vajiram. So, Keys dekhna hi bakwas hai.
also , Mine score in 2019 by various keys was 98 ... but by upsc keys is 110 though i ducked in paper 2.  In 2018 , My keys score was 97 actual score 112. In 2017 ... Actual score .. 102 .. real 108.
The common thing is - How upsc interprets. UPSC does not go Technically nazi for statement asked in question. They take common view and general perspective as answer for sentence. ... and I always followed the same. All coaching key go technical and cut out.
For ex - Last year ... *Can LA use the rules of Lokasabha.. * - Ye statement UPSC key me true hai. I marked it as true... Thinking that ki kahi likha nahi hai but koi rok bhi nahi raha ..  kar lo yaar speaker ki marji ... speaker jo kare. ... also .. as convention ... use hota hi hai. There is no technical proof of it.
On the same lines , I would say ... Two statements wil be correct.
1. Constitution defines judicial review....
2. A person eligible to vote ... made minister for 6 months... !!

So jaa ke pado. And Cut off will be 95+-2 for general.  yaar last year se paper easy nahi tha. Sabne 80 or 85 nahi kiya hai. Aur log marks bhi bada bada ke batate hai Forum p wahi aate hai jinka jyada achaa hua yaa jyada bura hua hai.
But actually .. Jo Concentration of people banta tha .. Last year 95 to 105 p sabse jyada log the ...!!
Is baar abbi tak sabse jyada log sab kaat ke clear clear 90 -95 me hai clear cut... Vo cut off band m hai. So, Cut off Is range me hoga. No wonder 90 se 1 yaa 2 no neeche bhi jaaye. Because ... last year bhi everyone like 100 s neeche kaise jaa sakta hai. To bhai number hi to hai. UPSC ka written rule to nahi hai. .. Jaisa performance vaisa cutoff.. 90 ke neeche bhi jaaye to jaane do .. Sajjan ko takleef kya hai bhai !!
Bur still to be fare 95+-2.

@vision2020 it's very commonplace now. However, what's critical here is the right training input data. So the statement that, as a final product, AI can indeed create meaningful short stories, on the surface isn't wrong, but again bad framing of question I'd say.

Getting 106 according to the Toppers answer key. Could I be through? There doesn't seem to be much discrepancies in the keys this time, except 4-5 questions.
