[Results] Prelims 2020 Over - Gearing for 2021

Because of the corona virus issue? If it does not happen then worst affected will be people whose interview is stuck, around 600-700 such people I think are yet to appear for their interview.

@neyawn sir and others, what is your take?

This is the official Thread for discussion of Prelims Postponement, Please do not create new threads for the same.

1. Didn't depend on mocks this time. Solved only 4/5 FLTs of ForumIAS.
2. Worked on PYQs.
3. Tried solving more questions.
4. Focussed more on basics.

Btw paper was unconventional, luck might have favoured me this time.

Hey guys, nothing that hasn’t been said already but just wanted to get this off my chest. Maybe this is just post-prelims senti-ness but I’ve been so angry since yesterday. All of us have worked hard, put in the hours, and from the looks of it done it with the right motivations and not some lal batti dreams. When I started prep my complacency took a big and justified hit. Any last remnants were shattered when I started following this forum. Never before have I seen such committed, hardworking, talented people - who are giving their time and effort to a cause that is still noble despite all the shit we see around us. It’s gross injustice that this prelims became about luck and guesswork. Guessing is an important skill but it’s just that - a skill. Which depends so much on factors in play any given day. A useful skill but it’s not a substitute for knowledge, even wisdom, that people here have painstakingly acquired over months and years of this arduous journey. You have all made yourselves or are in the process of making yourselves deserving of the position you want to occupy. So many here have become role models to me - they are way more deserving than I am. Who knows what sacrifices each of us has made. It’s gross injustice that all of that should be negated because somebody took it into their heads to shock the country with the paper this year. Maybe in the coming days someone will discover a method in this madness, somebody will be able to answer the big question of WHY, but that won’t make it any less unfair. Maybe I’m being idealistic and naive, but nobody who has put in sincere and planned hard work should have to feel what we felt when we first got the paper yesterday. That horrible sinking sick feeling is not what we gave years of our life for. I have never believed in prayer before, never been in a position where I have wished I could believe in it (cause privilege) but today I want to pray for a miracle, that somehow the cutoff falls drastically, but most importantly that all you beautiful stars achieve everything possible in this world and that one day this prelims will just be a bitter but not painful memory. Love to all.

@Knight_rider I don't think just because it is in the passage afterwards, it means correct answer. If we have to base our inferences based on the available passage only, the one that would fit the best with that part would be correct?
Aren't RC's supposed to be done based on the info available with no preconceived notions?
Your point is valid that if one of the options is given ahead in the full original passage, it can be quoted as inference, but somehow I do not think it will be correct if the others are more suited to the trimmed passage available!

found a couple of mistakes in quants of next ias, also they have not uploaded answer of that book and missing pages question the answer would be 7,8... for quants u can rely on cl i guess ,verbal remains ever elusive

in 2017 , 3-4 passage were taken from PIB ...and answer was in passage only. You can check one year later with upsc official key.

It's over, guys. I think it's time to stop the speculations and march forward. Here's a few things I would like to share that could be of some use for some of you. I'm sure you're all wiser in some or the other ways, but there are times when our wisdom doesn't comprehend the importance of things that are conspicuously obvious to us.

1. The exam has become a lot about keeping your nerves cool and applying your knowledge to the best of your abilities. It is no longer about the 3Rs - Read, Recall and Reproduce!

2. Randomness is the new normal. It will continue to be so, but we are also equally responsible for missing the essence of the exam. Biotechnology/Biology is becoming a separate discipline as equals the conventional subjects History, Geography etc. I had no knowledge of biotechnology last year. I got most of the questions wrong. This year I gave special emphasis on this area and it rewarded me.

For long, we have relied on the strength of Polity, Economy, History etc. Since, 2018 the exam has been transitioning to what I would say, its third cycle.

  • 1st was easy, factual.
  • 2nd was relatively dynamic, current affairs oriented + application-based
  • 3rd is a mix of two =>so it becomes deadly!

We need to innovate now. Whatever questions were asked this year were asked from the same thematic areas from where questions have been asked before =>Visible light communication, Pro nuclear transfer, about genes etc. Previous years questions will continue to remain clue to the upcoming year's questions.

Do not leave any area to maximise your chances of clearing prelims. That doesn't mean reading every trivial stuff. It's humanely impossible. It's not possible to know about things like Desher Katha, trivial factoids on National Parks etc. But, we need to be smarter than before.

My final two cents on what should be done for next year:

  • All endemic species must be prepared thoroughly.
  • Don't overdo Polity and Economy! The questions are simple and conceptual.
  • Medieval history should be given its due.
  • Developments in Science and Technology aren't limitless. Analysis of previous years questions would make you see that only these areas are important- Biotechnology, Alternative fuels, Space Physics, Particle Physics, Telecommunication, AI related developments etc. These can be prepared.

Last but not the least, the coaching tests are overrated and overhyped. They are not an indicator of how you'll be performing on the d-day. What matters on the d-day is a clear head, a good 8 hours sleep, lot of conviction in what you think and deduce and confidence to mark questions in the range of 85-90.

Every year a lot of coaching bashing happens here on the thread, the same people go back to the same institutes material and test series next year.

These materials certainly make the prep easier, but to only rely on them and then feel disappointed is more of a knee jerk reaction.

Imagine running around PIB, vikaspedia etc to know A-Z about government schemes, would take each of us weeks time. These so called institutes give you compilations for no money. Of course they get it back through test series and classes income and that's how this space is working.
