[Results] Prelims 2020 Over - Gearing for 2021

Because of the corona virus issue? If it does not happen then worst affected will be people whose interview is stuck, around 600-700 such people I think are yet to appear for their interview.

@neyawn sir and others, what is your take?

This is the official Thread for discussion of Prelims Postponement, Please do not create new threads for the same.

Reading news paper is out dated.. I think it is just basics they ask from Current affairs . Like Tiger Reserve question, elephant from kerala case , Cyclone etc.

Just a thought.

It is not fair to discount the importance of monthly CA magazines. Questions may/may not be directly asked from the compilation but it helps you gather and read about issues succinctly. It's easy to discredit it due to the nature of the paper. But there's a long road ahead of Mains and Interview. And UPSC is never about - Maine yaha se padha yahi se question aaye. It's about what you read and internalize.

Having said that, It's always been advised that CA compilations should be used as a supplement and in no manner should be a substitute to the newspapers that we read.

As far as 2020 is concerned, atleast the paper was not ambiguous. UPSC is notorious to set such close options that the next 2 months would be wasted wondering ki c hoga ya d.

There is no set pattern, there is no one best way of Taylor. Get the basics right, trust the wisdom of few, and leave the rest to fate. We cannot know everything under the sun

Yes. I feel that I saw around 10 question from the PT365 I read. And it may not have been direct but atleast it helped me eliminate the incorrect options.

Yes. I mean the best thing is to prepare current affairs ourselves using Newspapers magazines etc but since most of us don't do that, the next best thing is to go through coaching compilations. And the news for UPSC and the news for Vision aren't different. They both pick up from the same sources. Vision may miss a few things but that should be taken into account. I still feel that even after such a random paper, these compilations are necessary.

I see some people are rubbing it into other's wounds here. I mean questions like "obc, 106..what are my chances"... Dude.. You know clearly that you will be writing mains. Stop with this "what are my chances thing"... Be a little more sensitive. We have built a community that revels in each other's joys and stands up for each other when someone feels down. But this kind of attitude is plain sad. You are happy. Get on with it. Go and start answer writing. That's the main  thing.

Am sorry for this rant. But understand that only 1-2% are sure about their chances. Most are disappointed. Some are sad. Most are praying for miracle (myself included). Couple of my friends broke down on my shoulders this morning. I wept with them too.

So if nothing else, Be a little more sensitive.

@TwinAlco  In this question even statement 2 may be wrong because constitution of India provides judicial review only in case of laws violating fundamental rights. This statement is talking about to preserve the ideals on which constitution is  based and to protect liberty.  If we infer that liberty is fundamental rights, even then the second part of statement may not be correct. To preserve the ideals on which it is based, court has evolved the doctrine of Basic structure.

@Adi2077Last year I met an aspirant who said paper-1 was tough, but paper-2 I'll easily get 150+ so I am writing mains.

Luckily this year we have masks to safely escape such situations :P

@TenaciousYou maybe right. But since Right to vote became a constitutional right, at least as far as UPSC is concerned I guess without going deep into understanding the statement in a dozen angles (we have lawyers for that) its best to just mark whatever comes first to your mind. In most cases that's what is right.

However I maybe proved wrong next year. I have no qualms when the CEC itself says that right to vote is a legal right , but UPSC said constitutional, then who are we mere mortals to question UPSC.

@Sherkhan1428  Bhai I have been following this group for past few months and I can surely say you are a very humble and good man who hardworking as well as sensitive to issues around. Dont know about your marks and dont know about whether you will write mains this year or not but your kind of people are needed in the bureaucracy who are compassionate. Please dont let the negativity around you affect yourself.

These coaching walas coming with random cutoffs need to be confronted with. Without a very good sample size u can't predict cutoff.

Also many who are in the 90s may not provide their scores to them just coz this 90s range cause a sky high frustation

Wait for shankar cut off

@Equalizer vision and shankar were good last year. Both quoted 97 round. And they were correct.

I thank Vision IAS. It helped me in prelims by giving free current affairs material for which I paid nothing. And gave me sense of confidence even before the prelims which matters a lot. It's very easy to criticise, but very difficult to build up something. Have respect for their efforts and for the fact that they are providing it for free to student community.

I am not clearing the prelims this year but even if I top someday, I won't be proud of myself. UPSC has lost all respect of being the most coveted exam and test of intelligence. All it checks is ones guessing skills and that too not intelligent guessing but random chance.

It's applicable for this year for sure.
