Civil Services Mains 2020 Results: In or Out ? Way ahead, gratitude and Pain
The Civils Mains result has been declared. This thread is for sharing your grief , joy , mixed feelings - absolutely anything and everything.
No compromise with bench should be done. I always remain mentally prepared for faulty bench and subsequent action of getting it replaced. Go inside exam hall 20 minutes early check your seat and if there is any problem raise your request with teacher (in all probability he/she will try to ignore you) if they don't replace your seat go to UPSC personnel at centre they are mostly old age person and are very helpful request him politely, most of the time these person will solve your issue without any problem.I need some advice. I always wanted to know how do you guys mentally prepare for things beyond your control and not be anxious?To give you an example, I found my bench in the essay paper this year to be very shaky. Being the 1st paper, I kinda went blank for 5-10 minutes thinking how am I going to write 9 papers on this! This definitely cost me some marks. Another example is when someone switched a noisy pedestal fan in prelims this year right behind me and despite my pleadings, didn't budge. 3-4 minutes lost there as well.Long story short, how do I calm my mind in such situations? I've been a perfectionist all my life and any slight tweaking in the surroundings throws me off. I want to change this ASAP! Being from small town I never knew about IITs till my dream of becoming DOCTOR was shattered by one my relative, suggesting maths as subject for better future. after 10th boards results ( So to the worldcup final answer- I had Maths exam on the same day, initially bothered about not going to get 100/100 :P later joy of winning worldcup healed the sorrow).
After opting for engineering carrier, for 2 years I didn't even prepare for JEE exam. Just doing normal studies of 11th and 12th, It was my first JEE mains exam where I realised, beta tumse na ho payega. Didn't even clear JEE mains or say wasn't able to give JEE advanced. After 12th somehow joined coaching in my town itself. Later in next attempt somehow managed to get into IIT. It is hard to believe even for me that, till that JEE advanced, I only visited HARIDWAR (never been out of the city) that too for rituals related to my grandfather.
Being, Kuein ka mendhak, didn't help me in the college. Wasted so much opportunity due to low self-confidence. But it improved gradually. Was good in the college after 1st year, realised how much competition is there, how people think differently, made friends from all parts of India. Somehow without much effort got early placement.
so to the question, how JEE helped. If not for that exam or say my college, I would never have opted for UPSC CSE, that too in self study mode.
But I sometimes think that I was lucky to get into IIT, as well during placements. Left the job, was doing great till 2019 mains. After that lost track. Currently I miss my old self, (2019 wala). Probably preparing for JEE in a year and clearing that made me think that I can crack every exam in first attempt. But such is not the case with CSE, the persistence is required. Also there are more seats in JEE. The age factor comes in once you are in post college phase. Expectations are high, atleast for me, people around me thinks that I give them best chance at CSE (koi apna ladka hona chahiye IAS).
Only close to my previous achievements with less efforts, I came with in CSE is marks of essay in 2019. Otherwise, UPSC has warned me, itne se nhi hoga. Also sometimes it feels like I am out of luck after my placements, if that exists/ with hope that luck will play positive role soon.
But CSE journey is different - it is beautiful as well as cruel.

@BlueLotus I couldn't do it before the paper because many students before me had raised the issue to no avail. I stayed back after the essay paper to find a different bench. It took me 20-30 mins to get it replaced but at least I was in a better mood for the rest of my papers. I totally agree with you on being mentally prepared beforehand. Thanks.
I think a lot of it has to do with having a thorough conviction that it is going to be your day.
I remember that I had that for prelims. The invigilator wasted at least 5 minutes before I got my question paper. When I opened the question paper, I didn’t know any of the first 20 questions. I was extremely annoyed with the invigilator. However, at that time, I was in a bubble where I could keep the external stimulus out if I chose to. An exam hall is no place for firefighting. I took a minute to take some deep breaths, gather my thoughts, told myself that I was extremely prepared for the exam and that if I found the paper tough, everyone would. If I hadn’t taken that minute, I think I could easily have lost the plot.
For mains, I did not have the same conviction I had for prelims. Not even close, actually. I remember during GS2, I got annoyed with the invigilator who interrupted me so that I could sign/bubble something. That interruption took over one minute which feels like an hour in the actual exam hall. While I was bubbling, I asked the invigilator why it couldn’t have been done earlier. This incident threw me off track a bit. I lost my train of thought and focus for some time. I wasted too much of my attention on the fact that the invigilator wasn’t doing his job to my satisfaction. Attentiveness is a limited resource and during mains, your entire focus should be on the question in front of you.
The best we can do is to be prepared before the event. I hope to find that bubble again. :)

You did the right thing by getting it replaced. In my exam hall there was a guy whose desk use to transform into typewritter (it was like khat.....khat khat......) and in last 30 minutes (Khat khat khat khat.........). Irritated me a lot. That's why I thought ki Janhit main bench badal lena chahiye.

Honestly speaking I was damn sure that you will clear prelims. and those last days discussion were quite relaxing.

People will tell they went to iit.But won't tell that they got into it with 1 lakh rank(if you know what i mean) when I missed it despite getting 10678 rank(those days new IITs hav'nt come up in such huge numbers as they r today)
They will tell you they went to IIM Ahmedabad but wont tell they got there with 82 percentile.While I had to contend with IIM Lucknow,Indore and Kozhikode despite a 99.5 percentile(if you know what I mean).
Similarly people advised me last year about writing mains answer because they had got 750s rank.When marks came I had more marks than them,but I did'nt get interview call(if you know what I mean)
Anyways,frustration of abhilash in episode 5 sitting on that tea shop was genuine.Many feel the same way.

Failure is a tough pill to swallow, but there are a great number of lessons for you if you manage to swallow it with grace.

People will tell they went to iit.But won't tell that they got into it with 1 lakh rank(if you know what i mean) when I missed it despite getting 10678 rank.

Hello bhai,
I remember when mains got over, you were pretty down and downright dejected. Everybody came to support you, most of the people here commenting for you, encouraging you. Even when the results came, I remember few comments where people were asking whether you had cleared or not as they were worried about your mental health. I for one felt elated to hear you will give your interview as I read your anxiety and stress-related posts prior to the mains results. This is how you pay back to the community?
