Factoids for Prelims 2021

Hi,

Ranyo Ashoka, Himalayan nettle, Denisovan - Who would have thought of such random questions?

Creating this thread with the sole purpose of sharing facts that can be relevant for Prelims. While there is always this thought, that there is no end to learning and mugging up facts, but if we observe closely - the options are not very close and elimination is easy. By pooling our resources here, if we give it one reading also, the probability of retaining it on the D day and eliminating options increases exponentially.

I request the aspirants to actively contribute here and let's hope that we strike gold on 31st ;).

@sstarrr There are very few species who get the tag of critically endangered species by IUCN. So, one can go by this logic.

Choose the correct statement(s):
1.The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 protects only native species, and not exotic flora or fauna.
2. Foreign trade policy of India contains provisions governing the import and export of permissible species of wildlife and wildlife products and it is enforced through the Customs Act,1962.
3. Inflicting any harm to animals under prevention of cruelty to animals Act attracts fine of 10,000 rupees and imprisonment for 5 years.
A. None
B. 1 and 2 only
C. 2 and 3 only
D. 1, 2 and 3

@captainhaddock Option 2nd seems to be right, as DRI confiscated various exotic animals under Customs Act, 1962.
3rd statement probably could not be correct because it was enacted in 1962, considering that 10,000 amount is quite high. Plus it seems to me 5 year jail punishment is bit on higher side for just inflicting harms not even killing them(sorry PETA for using such harsh tone.)
3rd not sure but why would IAS get protection under WPA.

How is the statement 1 correct? Is it given in WPA?

@Conquer You seem to be right. I took a guess knowing that the third statement was wrong. Remember reading somewhere that the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act has a really petty fine which doesnt act as a deterrent to offenders. Didnt know that WPA doesn't include exotic species.

Statement 1 seems incorrect. WLS has a mandate to protect species and not NPs. NPs are created to protect the habitats. Also exotic is not necessarily equal to invasive. I am sure there must be some WLS out of 500 or so which would protect atleast some of the migratory birds which won't classify as native but probably exotic.

I read a scroll article which says that statement 1 is correct. I made a guess on similar lines.

"The water contains no common salts or other minerals and supports no water plants;   a larva called "cavaborus" abounds and eliminates bacteria in the water, thus contributing to its exceptional purity. The ancient Sastha temple is an important pilgrimage centre."-Sasthamkotta lake, Ramsar wetland. The extreme statements caught my eye....apparently thats what they write.

@AureliusM Illegal wildlife trade of exotic animals is an important issue covered by  news papers extensively. Wildlife protection act doesn't cover exotic species and second statement is correct. Prevention of cruelty to animals Act is being criticized for example levying fine of just 10 to 50 rupees or 1 month imprisonment for first offence
