Now that 1 week is over, it is time to shift focus to Mains. With barely 103 days left there is no time to waste.
@MalcolmThis is one of the most misinformed lines of thinking in my opinion. I used to share these thoughts till sometime ago and to my utter shock some of my batchmates still hold on to this line of thinking. The young entrants to IAS dream of becoming chief/cabinet secretary, IPS people dream of becoming IB director , IRS people Chairman, CBIC/CBDT.
- Bureucracy will see a vast change in the coming decades. The idea of seniority as it is conceived now will be no longer as relevant after a couple of decades. You already know that the government is mulling to retire people after 30/33 years of service.
- You have a long way to go before you reach those policy making positions. You should be more focused on how you plan to shape your career in the next 5 years than in te next 30. See if you enjoy your job. See if power and rank are your only priorities or you prefer luxury and peace of mind.
- Even if you join the department very young, you may not reach the top positions depending on several circumastances outside your control like the political dispensation or how badly you have damaged your health or wheter you have been unlucky enough to piss off a powerful senior/politcian at the very start of your career.
So 27 isnt late to join any service if you like the work and 21 is also too late if you don't.
Some people even predicting re-exam means the mains wr b conducted again. Height of..................
@Malcolm31 vaalon ko to suicide hi kar lena chahie fir
P.s I started at the age of 26 !
@Champakthanks a ton. We rarely get to know insider' s account of how the bureaucracy functions. I guess shiny instagram pictures of young first timers acing it, disappointed me. In addition the sheer unpredictability of the exam.
@TeddyWestsideI didn't mean to offend those who crossed 30. . But it is inspiring how people keep up the motivation and inspiration despite years of failed attempt. I truly stand humbled at their efforts .
@MalcolmThe whole glorification of selected candidates on social media is a part of a mega marketing cum misinformation campaign fueled by black money, unaware aspirants and an unethical coaching industry. It is our moral responsibility to fight it.
@MalcolmCEO of Jan Aushadi Scheme is an IRS 2011 batch officer. It's only 8 years of bureaucratic experience but look at his position now. There are multiple factors involved while scaling up the ladder.

Absolutely. Here, I am planning to give up preparation if I don't clear mains in my 2nd attempt. I have way too much respect for dedication and strength of those who give so many attempts.
@Malcolmsaid inMains 2019 Preparation and Discussion Thread:
Is it worth taking another attempt if one is over 27 years ? I mean, for services like ifs, even ias, irs, the major policy work happens at the top level. One may retire before reaching that stage i wish to know the opinion of the senior players here. Is it worth it?
Every Man/Woman is guilty of the 'Good' s/he did not do! And 'Good' my dear brother is not linked to any post you will come to occupy after you enter into services.
Agree that at Joint Secretary and above level major policy decisions are initiated but they are implemented at lower levels. When u enter into services Implement Food Security Schemes/Housing Schemes, Tax collection, monitoring, Women and children etc schemes well and you would have done ur part of the Good well.
Bureaucracy is static-o-dynamic. Views and actions you put on ground and with ur colleagues has potential to reverbate across the hierarchy.
Become such a person/bureaucrat who inspires people and colleagues through actions.
Policy making files mein dabi reh jaati hain.
Merry Christmas to you, your family and BAE iff any. May Santa make you succeed soon!!
@TeddyWestsideeven i started @26
@MalcolmThe following factors determine top positions after 15 years(esp IAS)
-Your inter-se seniority, which is determined by the total marks of CSE and LBSNAA training.Mere entry into service is not enough. This is why hardly any reserve category candidate get chance to be union secy even though they enter at the age of 21.
-Very soon, policy expertise will be a crucial factor in addition to inter-se seniority. Those incapable or unwilling to build policy expertise may not be appointed to top positions.
-Retirement age will be around 68 by 2050 due to demographic factors and pension fund crisis.Even though one enters IAS at 32,he/she will have more than 35 years of service.IAS becomes eligibile to be union Secy/Chief Secy of state after 30 years of service
why are people so concerned about reaching secretary level , isnt the whole point of joining ias to work at grassroots level , ensure proper implementation of policies etc
why worry about a possibility of thing that may or may not happen 20-25 years in future
many people suggest that i should leave preparation as post 27 years I wont be able to make it to top - but to me being DM and working at district level seems more glamorous (at-least for now )
@Kira0705well that is for ias. For ifs, irs, i think it's different.
@STthanks for the pep. Merry Christmas to you too.
@Kira0705yeah its great but after certain time not going to home for 4-5 days..travelling to difficult areas..not getting enough sleep..less time with beloved family and ageing ..starts affecting one's mental state..though working at grassroot level
, bringing change gives immemse satisfaction but after a time ones priority changes...need to grow and develop professionally personally keeps all motivated....even psychology talks about maslow's hierarchy of need which is part of human nature..
@Malcolmyea maybe , I mean I was suggesting to take 5-6 years of career at a time when planning something as we dont know what is in future .
i feel if we go with mindset that we want to reach at the top would make job a burden less than enjoyment . ifs irs etc would also come with their own experiences at the lower level , if I get selected , after working for 10-15 years I would re-evaluate again whether I would want to continue or move to some other sector( private NGO etc) but thats a headache for the future
@Lastworrieryes you maybe right maybe to me it seems all bright and shiny from outside but it helps me keep motivated also if i start thinking of 20-30 years ahead i tend to loose focus . but you are right human needs change with time
