Now that 1 week is over, it is time to shift focus to Mains. With barely 103 days left there is no time to waste.
@MalcolmYou know it's difficult to quantify 'worthiness'
I didn't get into IIT-Bombay right after 12th in first attempt..should I try again?
If can't make it to IIT still, should the option of pursuing engineering be given up?
I took CAT, didnt get ABC, should I not pursue MBA?
Civil services is a good job, worth working for. It has the 'potential' to take u on a wonderful 'self actualisation' journey. But at the end of the day, it is 'only' a job. Many quit services before becoming secretaries. When it comes to becoming secretaries, it is best of the best among fellow IAS officers, hell lot of politics goes into it(like in any top job in any profession- anywhere, only here stakes are higher )
Plus who knows who'll live till 60 !
So enjoy working for something you cherish. Most people above 27 are so burdened with family pressure(to marry, have kids like other realtives and well wishers) that they can't pursue this bold path. ButYOU CAN! So use it well!
All the best!️
The bitter reality of services is "its own caste hierarchy"
IAS are brahmins
Among IAS ,general merit candidates in top 30 inter-se seniority are brahmins.
Too much discrimination against "non-brahmins" and proportionate frustration.
The glamour of DM fizzles out as soon as "non-Brahmin IAS" realises the bitter reality.
@TheOptimistvery true. Thanks man. With school ending, 5 years of college and 3 years of upsc prep, i suddenly realised the last decade passed by so fast. It's as if just a few days back, I was loitering around outside school, bunking classes etc. Suddenly I am nearing 30s. I dunno whether others have shared similar thoughts. That's why , I kinda panicked when I see younger aspirants and anybody else moving fast with their lives. For me, the years seems to advance fast, but life remains stagnant.
@MalcolmLet me give you several examples.
Several of my batchmates and myself(all of us are from IITs and IIMs) started preparation once we finished our MBA and some even worked for 1-2 years. All of us around 26-27 and some are even around 29-30.All of us have left jobs worth very good salaries and some of my friends who are more talented than me have left jobs which they had in us,uk,newzealand and australia.
None of them thought about become secretaries or joint secretaries and not about money as well.
All of them know the reality of job i.e political interference and poor postings and transfer and everybody knows the risk of exam after plunging into it and after spending 18-20 lakhs in P.G and then leaving good jobs.
But they still did so as despite all the political interference and all the bads of the job its still better than a corporate job,the respect one gets and its more satisfying than a corporate job despite its all shortcomings..Those who have been in a corporate job can relate with this better.
P.S- See examples of gaurav agarwal(above age 30),Ira singhal(mba from fms and left her job in cadbury),this year's topper etc.
In fact the older you are the more likely you are to perform better in the job as u r more mature.
Hope this clarifies and motivates you to work doubly hard..
@MalcolmEvery individual on this planet has his/her unique life clock. Some achieve early, some a bit late and some might not at all. Everyone's track is different n unique. You just have to cherish the present n live with optimistic hope
@bevancomthat's really inspiring. Thanks a lot
@Kira0705believe me Once you have really developed this mindset of public service .. being in an administrative job is much much more satisfying whether it is of a tehsildaar, sdm, adm or dm ; talking of personal experience whenever i see articles in local news papers and tv channels praising me for my attempts to eradicate corruption from RTO office it gives me such an immense pleasure; there are surely perks of getting into administration at an early age but it’s never too late if you really want to do it !!
@TeddyWestsidenow it does reveal my identity and my sound a bit boastful but since there has been this discussion i would like to share this article which i read as i woke up and believe me these kind of things give such satisfaction that i can't express it here in words. !!
@TeddyWestsidewow man thanks for sharing its awesome, this is exactly what I meant , working in any level of administrative job in india where your work directly affects so many people and where systems and process have so much scope for improvement , there cant be a better place to be atleast for me .
Till date this video of Gaurav Agarwal and the lines he has said - " hum JUSTICE dila sakte h" remains my sole motivating factor of keep on trying for services !
@TeddyWestsidechalo ab pata chal gya shaadi main lifafa kiske Naam ka lana hai. Great to see your efforts being recognised
@TeddyWestsidegreat janab

@TeddyWestsideI didn't mean to offend those who crossed 30. . But it is inspiring how people keep up the motivation and inspiration despite years of failed attempt. I truly stand humbled at their efforts .
Those who give 2 - 3 attempts and cross 28 years usually joins job which gives them a lot of satisfaction. It may be one of many reasons what keep their spirit alive.
just came across a quote
"I evidently knew more about economics than my examiners"
John M Keynes(I hope non-economics students will know him as well)
explaining why he performed badly in the civil services exam.
I am know more convinced that this exam has always been questioned for its mediocrity. Ex- A JNU sociology topper, who masters critical understanding of original texts, gets 50 marks less than people like Pradeep Singh.
