This exam is for Generalists not for Specialists position so obviously dexterity n depth is less appreciated than the width of knowledge.

Obviously this exam is not to show your prowess in a particular stream of knowledge but general wider understanding of things around you.
By this logic finance minister sd b d best economist, Prime Minister the best pol science fellow or lawyer, health minister the best doctor, defence minister the best soldier. This is completely rubbish.
Its all our media, Bollywood, parents who have planted in our tender mind that the only way to prove your worth in this life is by clearing this exam.

Civil service aspirants come to preparation for so many non-sense reasons like revenge from girlfriend/boyfriend, supersede your neighbors, relatives, competitors, avenue to gain power to settle scores with enemies n what not.

@Dreadful
Legitimacy for political executive lies in electoral mandate and legitimacy for appointed executive lies in their policyexpertise.Itis a well established fact.Generalist service is a fictitious misnomer. The rational behind assessing an optional paper is to assess in-depth understanding of thatsubject.GSpapers are meant to assess general understanding.

@abc123completely agree with your arguments but in an exam like UPSC where the arena of interpretation is quite wide with lot of discretion in the hands of examiner, you can't equate two unequally positioned people. You can equate both only if you are sure enough that both the copies were checked by the same person. And finally there is a lot of gap between possessing in depth knowledge and writing appropriate answer. I have generally found that people possessing in depth knowledge misinterpret the question and divert the answer from core concern in order to create an impact.

@Hakunah_MatataAur subject toppers need not be very good in general awareness. Upsc filters them out at the prelims stage itself. There are only a handful who are good at GA as well as their optionals. Hence expectations of checkers are not as strict as someone who checks MA papers of sociology in JNU.

@abc123there is very weak relation b/w topping in university and excelling in a competitive examination. I am from chemical engineering IIT Khragpur. My department rank was in 30s out of 60 students. Topper of my branch got rank in 200s while mine was under 100 (in GATE). Similarly none of my school toppers
in class 12th was able to crack JEE examination. Aptitude required for topping in university/board examination is very different from topping in competitive examination. In competitive examinations ability to guess right answers (especially in prelims) or writing answers for questions in which one has very less knowledge gives advantage.
So dont think that just because he is a sociology topper of JNU he will top in any competitive examination or he is better than Pradeep Singh w.r.t CSE (he may be better but examiner knows us from what we write in GS papers only.

@abc123, replying to (3): any source for increase in retirement age? Even in that case, pension funding shouldn't be a problem, right? Since 2004, govt has completely moved to the contribution-based NPS rather than lump-sum model earlier.

TG info about tomorrow being the D day seems unreliable. What do you guys think?

@ChampakBecause of so many "D - days " in last few days, my focus is shifted from D-day to "D - second" , which means the second at which result will be declared..

@ChampakThere is no way of knowing. There is so much silence and no one has a clue.

@MikhailMy source said it would be delayed further by at least another 2 weeks. Not very reliable though.

That specialization is being discouraged by USPC is amply clear from 2013 pattern change.

  1. Prelims-----only GS now, one optional as another paper removed. Even technical CSAT is only qualifying.

  2. Mains----- only one optional paper 500, GS 1000 ( before 2013 it was 2 optionals each 300 means 600 optional n GS 3 papers only, marks I m not sure).

  3. Personality Test----- Not much questions from one's educational background like engineering, MBBS and all but general understanding type questions only.

Hope I m clear.

the person whom we can trust is some one who is in service already n can get info on probable d-day through some sources. And you are the one who is in service already?
