Mains 2019 Preparation and Discussion Thread

Now that 1 week is over, it is time to shift focus to Mains. With barely 103 days left there is no time to waste.

@abhishek_pthanks for your suggestion and i hope you have similar rationale behind suggestion as me and i think most people will concur with your suggestion so i request everyone not to suggest as i have decided to go with 2021 attempt and face the heat if pattern changes.
Thank you bro.
Sorry everyone for such long post and trouble.
Just a query, apart from optional removal and age reduction is there any other change that cmtt report will offer?

@abhiIf u are not doing job and giving all your time to prep, then 2020 can be done since u have already covered your optional once.

@abhi
Removal of CSAT paper and transitioning from the current practice of counting attempt only if attendance sheet is signed to counting of attempt if the form for prelims is filled are on table for discussions I guess.
Have read about both on The Print.

@abhiyou are never fully prrpared to give this exam. You mist be confident enough. Attempt few tests by downloading from any TG group. You will be able to analyse yourself.

@abhiWhich attempt? If you are going to take a break, you should know exactly where and what to improve on. I also took a break in 2016 and 2018 but only because I thought I needed a lot of improvement in mains after looking at my mains marksheet. But if you are only starting, then first you need to know where you stand and for that you shouldn't skip one year.

@K_9bro as mentioned above i have never attempted but i know the rules of game. If i somehow clear pre,i am sure i will falter in mains.I know dropping a year is a big risk as i can falter in 2021 pre itself but i want to take time and build a base.
Thanks for your suggestion.
What do you think can optional be removed in 2021?(just asking,i know anticipating doesn't help)

@dr-ahmednaaz8567for EWS, income of parents as well as candidate's income and his/her spouse's income are taken into account.

I have heard atleast one coaching centre faculty who asked to strictly stick to writing in the medium of the examination only. Even sanskrit quotes need to be written in Latin script to not risk deduction of marks.

@abhisaid inMains 2019 Preparation and Discussion Thread:

@abhiKindly suggest whether i should take a risk and attempt exam in 2021(if i dont clear i would be in trouble but optional will help in pcs) or shall i study day&night in a haphazard way and attempt in 2020(chances of clearing will be bleak)
I plead for help.

Give it in 2020. You started your preparation in 2017 and even if I assume that you couldn't study for 1 year because of the unavoidable circumstance, you've still been in this for 2 years now.

Let me tell you one thing, you'll never feel completely confident with your preparation in CSE. You'll probably feel again in 2021 that something is lacking.

Coming to 2020, 5 months are left for prelims and 8.5 months for mains. Give one more month for optional and give 4 months to prelims. I am assuming you've been studying newspapers diligently since July. Even that much would serve as a good base for GS.

I am insisting on giving the exam this time because every attempt is an experience. Even if you clear prelims and are underprepared for mains, you'll give your best in those 3.5 months in between. The learning from this attempt would help a lot next time. Also, you've taken coaching and by giving one more month to optional, I guess it would be manageable ya atleast 1-2 mahina prelims aur mains ke beech mein lagaakar ho jaayega.

Exactly...I thought to skip prelims coz I was underprepared for Mains wrt optional, but my mentor told me to just simply attempt. So once i cleared Prelims, those 3-4 months was the best period as I was more devoted, focused and serious during this time. Even if I dont clear mains, this experience will greatly help me for the next attempt

@visionmani will like to differ here.
Firstly, If one has no idea of mains than its better to leave that attempt. Otherwise it is very probable that aspirnt will get caught in UPSC Chakravyuh. After mains we have tendency to wait for result despite of poor performance in mains examination. After mains result one can study for mains at max one month. From february he has to study for Prelims given the increasing difficulty and randomness of PT. One should attempt prelims only if he is sure that he can overcome this phase and start preparation immediately after mains examination.
Secondly, Exhausting attempts reduce our confidence. (even if he knew that was his not best attempt)
Thirdly, if one is not prepared enough that even after mains he will not be able to find the areas where he is lacking.
Prelims should be attempted only if one has decently covered optional or fully prepared with GS or decent knowledge of GS and Optional. Only then even his failure will be rewarding in long run. First attempt may not be the best attempt but at least it should be decent attempt.
