Mains 2019 Preparation and Discussion Thread

@STyr history being my optional and after reading 2015-2018 tak ke vision ke answers i found GS-1 very manageable ; gs-2 i found really really tough , i dont think i will be able to repeat 108 marks of 2017 in gs-2 this time not even 100 i guess; gs-4 again i found comparatively on easier side !!

@nikhilit20112751 GS2 me 70-75 average jaega. Most will not cross 80. 90 above mein to top ho jaega. Ques were vague. Normal Polity IR se kaafi different tha. Historically it has been a low scoring subject as well.

@nikhilit20112751 yaar GS1 mein i did completed paper but confidence nhi hain kisi bhi question mein.. Mangroves, corals waale mein points chhoote honge, Society was trivial, American and french revolution and Gandhara Art mein wrote just 1 page in tabular form.

Baaki bhai commendable and respect that you read Vision from 2015-2018.. As i said in one of my comments, People do study alot..

@shubh36absolutely....ques like integrated farming,visvesvaraya,cyber dome,watershed type ques required specifics...i dnt think upsc would give much marks for writing some peripheral stuff....and like gs1 of last yr if they decide to toy with checking thn marks would reduce even more

But even if we write average and generic stuff, 2-3 marks per question toh mil jayenge.
Aur saare questions toh sabako nahi aate honge, toh I guess itna difference aayega nahi

Haan, it will be more like 85-90.
But agar checking liberal karte hain, toh phir wohi 100 tak bhi ja sakti hain

@dancingminionI don't know but I have this gut feel that they asked specific ques across all papers (even in my optional History) for a reason. It reduces the chance of getting any marks if we are not to the point. Conversely, for specific ques, even precise 1 page answers may end up getting more marks.

On the basis of GS and optional papers difficulty level and their ambiguity in understanding my feeling is that average marks will be reduced
GS1- 10 marks
GS 2 - 25 marks
GS 3 - 15 marks
GS 4 - 10 marks

Total 60 but let's take 50 as average marks reduction in GS papers only

Now let's talk about optional

Most scoring papers like mathematics was difficult and even all optional papers were difficult this year
So I consider 30 marks reduction in optional papers

So total 50+30= 80 marks variation

What I feel final cutoff for general will not cross 710 for general , thus those candidates who are getting 700 plus should prepare for interview

In past year GS papers had key words like CRITICALLY EXAMINE, EXAMINE, CRITICALLY ANALYSE so aspirants used to write intro, positive , negative and way forward .....this year no directive like CRITICALLY EXAMINE , so many students faced problems to diversify their answers. ....those who were depend on vision 365 may have faced problem bcz all topics in vision has ...positive, negative, way forward

What I felt that those aspirants write in paragraph may get advantage this year bcz questions were discussion oriented

Finally guys be confident if u r near 700 plus ( general category )

Anyone here who gave interview last year

@Vikait was my first attempt and first mains. I found history paper easier than last few years’. In gs I did nothing exceptional but optional is making me bite my nails. Have no idea about the marks in such paper even after attempting full 500 marks paper confidently, I have a strong intuition that mains result will shatter and shock all of us.

@abhishek_pand any senior who gave mains this year with history optional. What are your views on the extent this paper can be shocker even after having some relatively easier questions??

@DKTbrother.. 720 maan le agar toh.. 720/7 ke hisaab se 102 bante hain.. aap ye bol rhe hain ki avg 102 in all papers will make one sail through mains.. Aapko thoda mushkil nahi lagta ye.. or am i missing something..

@STyr sample space bada ambiguous rhega aise predictions me. Bahut dhurandhar bethe hai upsc ki race me...900-870 me hi khub nikal jaenge

last year marks difference between 1st rank and 100th rank is 100 marks ....my analysis is on the basis of difficulty level of all papers

there will be 20-30 people in all category who will do exceptionally well this year too...but most of the aspirants will get average marks .....

importantly this year we have 90 extra vacancy
