How much truth is there to this bs making rounds in market :

1st question must be sorted or else you overall get less marks 

I saw a short video of a certain teacher of Hindi medium. I used to take him seriously but after such casual talks on his side, he seems more of an entertainment.

Aisa kuch nhi hota..last time ethics ka 1st question chod diya tha matrix wala..still got 109..

But yes if first 4-5 questions are sub standard it does make an impression and psychologically impacts the examiner's attitude..you are penalised more for mistakes and granted less additional marks for good things compared to someone who has created a better impression..but this will happen only if one examiner checks the entire paper, if subject matter experts are checking respective portions then this shouldn't hold true..but its always advisable to write a few good answers at start if you know those answers..

@Kenshein I took the same interpretation of not repeating mistakes again and again.
There a r decent number of people who took this interpretation.
Moreover, essays are open to multiple interpretation. Its about how much justice we have done to our interpretation.

@Capedcrusader1 Subject experts check each section.Its not that it will carry throughout the paper.However,impression do matter.
Good impression leads to ignoring of few mistakes while bad impression magnifies mistakes.
My first 2 3 questions in Geography are not written well.It is bound to have a negative  impact on other geography questions.
The extent depends on examiner.

So there are two sides to it. The usual narrative is that entire answer copy is checked by one examiner. Hence, the notion that you need to do initial few questions well to gain examiner's trust.

The second view is that each copy goes to multiple examiners based on their subject expertise. So GS-2 polity questions to one examiner, IR questions to another and so on.

Anecdotal evidence suggested that the second view is more likely. Even RAS copies now are checked like that (that I can assure with some certainty). And it makes sense right, you cannot find faculty that is expert in all subjects comprising a GS paper.

So if second view is more plausible, then this dilutes the entire theory of writing great answers initially to win examiner's trust. I don't know why it's still in vogue. Though it can be of some use in ethics paper where it is more likely that the entire paper is checked by one examiner.

Maybe others can chip in with what they have heard in this regard.

The topic 6 was selected by few candidates as compared to topic 5. It might be termed as unconventional.

At first look when one is not aware of full quote it was difficult to comprehend and open to interpretation. I related the topic to assam flood(brahmaputra being river) and how it is annual affair, the government and citizen apathy towards the issue(society stepping into river literally and metaphorically). Expanded to various dimensions(covid, sports, economy, riot control Singapore example etc) and in end gave solution.

But if one is aware of full quote of heraclitus( very few candidates knew) then essay would have completely different meaning. As of now we can only pray to upsc to be lenient on topic 6🙏 . 

In end, my friend we both have stepped into same river(topic 6). Let us see we drown or swim like Michael Phelps. What did you right?

@AyehshaS i wrote the same essay but i interpreted that we are supposed to be proactive...started from covid 19, how we should have made arrangements before 2nd wave and all...i cannot even remember what i wrote after that.

I have written the essay as I was aware of the quote of Heraclitus (Thank you to philo optional)and the way he intended it. But i dont think they will simply strike off an essay just for the simple reason of being interpreted in a way that was different from the original intention of the quoter. One can assume that writing in the way Heraclitus intended may fetch more marks but then again it will all depend on how coherent one manages to deal with the topic

I described what i meant with each word and the overall quote
How we have to learn from mistakes, have to be adaptive n if we repeat same thing n expect different result it will be foolishness( Albert Einstein)
Examples Present Russia Ukraine war bloc formation we cannot repeat mistakes that led to world war 
Udaipur Kanhaiya killing and past mistake of  Communalism 
K rail has to be ecologically friendly otherwise we will repeat same past mistake of Kerala floods 
Covid 2nd wave tragedy as we again repeated mistakes of 1st wave 
Britain 19th century Luddite movement where machines were destroyed as unemployment rose due to Industrial revolution 
We cannot repeat same mistake in 4th IR 

Then wrote that sometime we r forced to step into the same river due to circumstances and poverty 
How in Meghalaya poor people r stepping into same river of rat hole mining because of abject poverty 

Then what should we do before stepping into river 
Firstly,We have to change approach before stepping into river 
Eg ISRO couldn't fully succeed in Chandrayan 2 
It learnt from mistakes and made new Inflatable Aerodynamics Decelerator which will help in soft landing 
2nd we have to learn swimming (developing capabilities) health education skill
3rd importance of life boats who save us in tough times that is family friends mentors 
4th if we want to step far in the river we must use boat which is a symbol of collective effort as many rowers row together 
Means nation has to be united for progress  

I took a different interpretation than Mr Hereclitus and hope he will not check my essay paper

Saying from past experience, if someone has creatively interpreted the topic and given arguments and justifications- Why you can not/ should not repeat mistakes ? , Why do people still repeat mistakes, How not to repeat mistakes ? etc- you are bound to get above average marks. 

In essays structure >>content. So need not worry about what you have written, if there is a logical flow in your essay.

Quite impressive. You seems to be experienced candidate. What did you attempt in part A. I attempted  topic 3 history scientific and romanticism.

My score in essay has been consistent on 109 marks (2020, 2021). Hope it improves this year.
