Bhai 3 ghante padh to paata nahi main jisse mera future ban sakta hai, podcast kya sununga! :( :(

Dude, it's more of a consumption. Not a great comparison. xD

It is more like saying bhai 10 ghante padh toh paata nahi, ek season kaise binge karunga?

Feelings samjho bhai, feelings!

Hello folks,

I had taken an optional( Mathematics ) purely based on interest. My feel, had been, since it encompass topics taught in bachelors/masters, depth needs to be covered.

Over the time, 3 mains after, i feel i have digressed from my initial belief. I have solved past year questions, solved whatever standard preparation is required. Questions were fairly straightforward in past years, hence, i never had any doubt on my preparation.

But as UPSC has it, it constantly pushes its limits - setting questions from unasked regions, tricky ones, beyond standard books. That's when i realised, that i have learnt to solve questions, but i have not understood the basics behind it.

Following the topper's guide, i believe, gave me enough idea/methods to solve a problem. But i miss the mental picture of the concepts, the intuitions behind concepts. My faults are re-inforced when i tried to solve various questions from university / entrance exam papers related to a topic.

Given, the cyclic process of this exam, i have scanty time left to clear my concepts. I am really in a fix whether to stick or leave this optional. Now, is it only me or folks( with other optionals ) too face such dilemma ? If yes, how do you plan to cope with it ? If no, do you think, i am overthinking and needs to switch optional ?

Cricket is a subject on which almost everyone in India has an opinion. So let's talk cricket!

Next month we have World Test Championship final. I have lost count of how many finals and semi finals we have lost in last 5-6 years which we should have easily won, given our form. In every tournament we play the league stages like a boss then suddenly we play our worst cricket in finals. This has become sort of routine now, 6 years and multiple finals cannot be a coincidence.

This time also I am having the same old feeling. My heart says we should win easily but mind is not convinced.

Forum ki junta ko kya lagta hai? Kya finally hum koi final jeetenge ya ek bar fir humara dil tootega?

Feel free to share any of your observations.

Don't know why cricket experts not call it "choking".

All the time it happens with suddenness, except may be T20WC final with SL where their bowling was too good in death overs.

Then 2015 WC the opening was going good, suddenly Shikhar Dhawan got out and no one was there to stabilize the innings

2016 T20 WC and Champions trophy are blamed on "no balls", which is partially true.

2019 WC was also there was just chaos, random team selections, random batting order, bit of luck in terms of weather and day got shifted.

But I feel this is just the trend in overall SPORTS scene in India. Before Olympics so many promising faces give hope and somehow can't perform. 2012 and 2016 - there were many players on top of their games but missed podium.

Is it somehow to do with upbringing of Indians or something else?

Coming to WTC final- I feel it is Advantage NZ - first as they are playing series prior to the final, plus they are more suitable for conditions. Kane Williamson, if there is player to play for someone's life (currently), is the person. Trent boult those in-swinging balls will surely trouble Rohit and Virat. Gill is low on confidence now.  Also memories of recent outings with NZ too aren't helping.

but........

The way India as a team played in AUS was surreal, it gave us hope. Players like Rishabh Pant we can rely to take game away from opposition. plus Sir Jadeja and R Ashwin (hope they both play in 11) as batsman are providing confidence.

Much of it will depend upon TOSS. Hope this time Kohli win the toss.

As a cricket fan I just want to see a competitive game, not one sided.

PS: these are personal views of writer :P

Regarding your broader question on upbringing of Indians.. Well, having myself played professional athletics at national level I can tell you that lack of exposure, infrastructure and politics in selection are BIG problems.  But these cricket guys cannot complain of that I guess. They have got the best support system.

Regarding current situation bhai mujhe toh lagta hai ye kohli hi paunti hai. He should just quit captaincy from all forms and just focus on batting. The problem in Indian cricket is no one has the balls to tell him directly on his face that dude, you are doing a great disservice to the nation. Like sachin in 1998-99 he should quit captaincy and just focus on batting. His unnecessary ego is hurting India.

Regarding match conditions, completely agree with you. Williamson and Boult are the men to beat.

It was about emotional aspect, baaki to infra, support I agree. Eg. PV Sindhu despite being ahead in the game somehow lost in 2016 Olympics final.

The Kohli thing I don't know. May be he has the same problem as talked about Sachin that he used to expect same things he was capable to do and we know it wasn't possible. The atmosphere is surely bit negative in his captaincy contrary to  Rahane's. But  in test we don't have options either, Rahane isn't reliable as batsman. But surely I would love to see Rohit doing captaincy in 2022 T20 WC then in 2023 WC.

But I don't see that coming, he can't/won't quit captaincy may be because of "BRAND". As Indian Captain is more heavy word than Indian player. Otherwise RCB deserves different captain after all these years of failure.

Yar I think that emotional maturity is an extension of upbringing. And as I said these cricket guys play such competitive levels at young age that they should really adapt.

In white ball cricket I am absolutely convinced that Rohit should be the captain, reasons are obvious. In tests also I believe Rahane should replace him. Yes, he is not as capable as Kohli batting wise but same was the case when Dhoni was captain.  Dhoni was not as great a test batsman but still just on basis of his sheer ability to lead he remained the captain and others accepted him also. But this kohli won't let that happen. That is why I said his ego is hurting India.

Bhai I was sprinter (100 and 200m). Interstate, inter university, zonals and open sabme khela hu. Not in federation.

Actually humare yahan athletics ka kafi acha mahol tha. You may know some of my seniors.. Amiyan mallick( 100m national record) ,Dutee chand and shrabani nanda( both played in Rio Olympics). They are 4-5 years seniors to me. Sometimes we used to train together.

What were your marks in Mathematics in the three Mains? It will give us an idea regarding the extent of your doubts and worries.

@nerdfighter Oh this is nice. Primarily it is laziness, which prevents me for making any notes. But i think a brief summary is imp, else one can't bank upon the subconscious memory

I have experience of one mains with maths.

Scored 138 and 105 in 2019.

However, i agree that new unexplored questions asked however, if one attempts even the standard questions across paper, especially paper 2, one has decent chances. However, one needs to be thoroughly prepared in atleast one part of paper 2. I have chosen part B of paper 2. I try to attempt 150 marks from this section.

How much have you scored across attempts ? Did you prepare the whole syllabus ?

@RonWeasley 2018, it was P1 - 84 , P2 - 71 ( P1 and P2 syllabus was incomplete ). 2019, It was P1 - 106, P2 - 82 ( Last topic Fluid was incomplete and some topics here and there ). 2020 year was a complete preparation, covering all standard sources, but i failed to finish the paper.

I honestly feel there is scope of improvement. Around 30-35 marks in paper 1 and upto 65 marks in paper 2.

Did you practice enough in exam like conditions before the mains ?

@Omen Not many tests i could write in time bound manner. I looked at questions and tried to solve it, but not as mocks tests. Yes, i too feel the same about huge scope of improvement .

But, i felt i am lacking the confidence to face  unconventional papers. Krishna series books on most topics helps in  solving questions. But, i think i am not getting clarity of thought on topics like real analysis, modern algebra, complex analysis, vector calculus. Analytic Geometry, ODE, PDE, LPP, NA & CP is by far okay to me.
