Consider the following statements about Indian wetlands:

1. In India majority of wetlands are areas under paddy cultivation.

2. Chilika Lake and Keoladeo National Park are protected as water-fowl habitats under Ramsar Convention.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

a 1 only
b 2 only
c Both 1 and 2
d Neither 1 nor 2

Are Paddy fields included under wetlands?  @upsc2020

(g) “wetland" means an area of marsh, fen, peatland or water; whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh, brackish or salt, including areas of marine water the depth of which at low tide does not exceed six meters, but does not include river channels, paddy fields, human-made water bodies/tanks specifically constructed for drinking water purposes and structures specifically constructed for aquaculture, salt production, recreation and irrigation purposes;

Answer given in SFG  for the above question is 'C'.  Definition is from Wetland rules,2017.

@PhoenixD Geostrophic winds are not parallel to pressure gradient. They are parallel to isobars. This happens because a balance between the Coriolis force and the pressure gradient force is created. Isobar is a line showing the points where the pressure is the same (this means the pressure gradient would be zero). Jet streams are just high speed air currents that are caused by a large pressure gradient. Also, geostrophic winds are theoretical and is nearly an impossibility practically.

Q For elections/nomination to the Parliament, which of the following is correct?
a)  A retired Chief Justice of India cannot be nominated by the President to the Rajya Sabha.
b)  A candidate fielded by a recognized political party does not need any proposer to file his nomination for Lok Sabha election.
c)  If any person is convicted of an offence of bribery, he/she shall be disqualified from voting at any election for a period of six years.
d)  All of the above statements are incorrect.

I marked D. Answer given is C

How is option C correct?- Isn't the disqualification of 6 years regarding the contesting of elections or membership (in case of sitting legislator) but not regarding voting at elections.
As far as i understand disqualification from voting does not have a time limit to it. A person stands disqualified to vote upon conviction itself which can be more or less than 6 years.
Please confirm.

@TristanHarris Paddy Fields are technically part of Wetlands. The definition used in the "rules" has 2 parts actually...the first part is copied directly from Ramsar. From.."but does not include..." it is added by the rules so that various provisions of the Rules don't apply to a very wide area. For example, the Rules prohibit land-use changes around notified wetlands - this obviously cant be done for say, private paddy fields.

What is a Wetland?

Three conditions should be satisfied: Hydrological Saturation, Hydric Soils, Hydrophytes.

yes that's right. the bar is for contesting and not for voting. I think this is some simulator question. It has been a misprint.

@Nike You can disqualified from Voting even without conviction. If you are in lawful custody you are disqaulified from voting as long as you are in custody. Have never come across this 6 year rule for voting. Its probably wrong.

Definition is quite unambiguous under the Rules. Colloquially, paddy fields are called temporary wetlands but the rules explicitly lay them outside the purview of "wetlands."

However, the statement is from Vikaspedia. It says 18.4 percent of the land surface in India are wetlands and that 70 percent of that is under paddy cultivation.

Hi,

This doubt has accumulated over the Geography SFG week. Two days back in the Oceans test, the solution quoted the NCERT (Fundamental Physical Class XI, Ch 14):

"As a wave approaches the beach, it slows down. This is due to friction"

Today's test (Indian physical geography) quotes from the Natural Disaster chapter (Ch 7) under Tsunamis:

"The speed of the wave in the ocean depends upon the depth of water. It is more in the shallow water than in the ocean deep"

Conceptually, I always remembered the latter, so I ended up getting both Qs wrong :ok_woman:
I understand context is important, but can anyone explain what you understand with both these bits put together? Since the Prelims's not going to be a sectional test and you can't go back to just one textbook, what would you mark?

"GNP is that income or product which accrues to the economic agents who areresidents of the country. (i.e. income earned by NRIs will not be part of India's GNP)."

Thanks in advance

@forumiasacademy

Isn't it the other way round? Isn't a wave always faster in deeper water? Having high wavelength and speed. As it reaches the shore, wavelength decreases, amplitude increases and speed decreases?

@ramaputri thanks for the question haven't studied macro since cllg..needed to revisit the topic.

from gdp to gnp requires adding net factor income from abroad...nfia= income earned by Indians in India from foreign sources  -foreign  income going out from India (this is alretady accrued in GDP so is reduced) ) since nri earn income in foreign land they are not added in nfia,,however remittance etc are added in gdp
