Factoids for Prelims 2021

Hi,

Ranyo Ashoka, Himalayan nettle, Denisovan - Who would have thought of such random questions?

Creating this thread with the sole purpose of sharing facts that can be relevant for Prelims. While there is always this thought, that there is no end to learning and mugging up facts, but if we observe closely - the options are not very close and elimination is easy. By pooling our resources here, if we give it one reading also, the probability of retaining it on the D day and eliminating options increases exponentially.

I request the aspirants to actively contribute here and let's hope that we strike gold on 31st ;).

Sequencing the genome of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has revealed thatit is a beta-coronavirus of lineage b and contains a furin-like cleavage site which is absent in lineage b coronaviruses including the closely related SARS-CoV.This is what led to some media outlets suggesting that the presence of this additional element in the virus suggests that it was tampered with or modified in a way to make it more dangerous.

Drug Price Control Order

Relevant to note thatonly the retail price or the ceiling priceof scheduled drugs (NLEM) is what is fixed by the NPPA.

TheMRPof even these drugs is to be fixed by the manufacturer basis the above retail price fixed by NPPA plus applicable taxes.

A GI tag is valid for 10 years while a Patent is valid for 20 years. Both are to be registered with Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks.

Difference between GI and Appellation of Origin

Appellations of origin are a special kind of geographical indication (GI). GIs and appellations of origin require a qualitative link between the product to which they refer and its place of origin. Both inform consumers about a product’s geographical origin and a quality or characteristic of the product linked to its place of origin. The basic difference between the two concepts is that the link with the place of origin must be stronger in the case of an appellation of origin. The quality or characteristics of a product protected as an appellation of origin must result exclusively or essentially from its geographical origin. This generally means that the raw materials should be sourced in the place of origin and that the processing of the product should also take place there. In the case of GIs, a single criterion attributable to geographical origin is sufficient – be it a quality or other characteristic of the product – or even just its reputation.

Polar Paradox: Scientists theorize that melt caused by climate warming may actually increase the extent of sea ice in the polar regions. A modest climate warming would increase summer melting of snow, glaciers, and sea ice, thus increasing the amount of freshwater entering the polar oceans. Freshwater has a higher freezing point than salty sea water, resulting in more extensive formation of sea ice, while increased warming might keep this ice pack from becoming as thick as usual during winter.
