Factoids for Prelims 2021

Hi,

Ranyo Ashoka, Himalayan nettle, Denisovan - Who would have thought of such random questions?

Creating this thread with the sole purpose of sharing facts that can be relevant for Prelims. While there is always this thought, that there is no end to learning and mugging up facts, but if we observe closely - the options are not very close and elimination is easy. By pooling our resources here, if we give it one reading also, the probability of retaining it on the D day and eliminating options increases exponentially.

I request the aspirants to actively contribute here and let's hope that we strike gold on 31st ;).

ILO Conventions

India  has  ratified  six  out  of  the  eight  core  ILO  Conventions.  These  are  the  Forced  Labour  Convention  (No.  29),  Abolition of  Forced  Labour  Convention  (No.  105),  Equal  Remuneration  Convention  (No.  100),  Discrimination  (Employment  and Occupation)  Convention  (No.  111),  Minimum  Age  Convention  (No.  138)  and  Worst  Forms  of  Child  Labour  Convention (No.  182).

India has  NOT ratified  Freedom  of  Association  and  Protection  of  the  Right  to  Organise  Convention  (No.  87),  Right  to Organise  and  Collective  Bargaining  Convention  (No.  98).

You've mentioned 9 overall.

I think C189 is not a core convention?

Project barn owl, Lakshwadeep:

Barn owl has been an excellent predator of rodents in palm system. Absence of rat snake and barn owl population in Lakshadweep Islands as well as close spacing of coconut palms are few of the main reasons responsible for the flare up of rodent population in the Island system. About 40-50% yield loss is reported due to rodent damage in Island system. Introduction of few pairs of barn owls and the nesting boxes could be a very successful strategy in the biological control of rodents. This could form one of the classical bio-control approaches in rodent management.
