@Mindgame Poor Economics is primarily more important from Mains perspective, but some simple concepts can be asked in Prelims too like RCT, Nudge policy, Micro financing etc.

I was also talking from Mains point of view only.

Are there any other books you have been reading.

I am trying my hands on the power of subconscious mind. I bought it like 7 years back hugely recommended by a friend back then.

Did not read it for many years. Accidentally, today I saw it and decided to read it.

@Neyawn I have inculcated the habit of reading books only during UPSC preparation. Some of the books that I have read (chronologically):
1. Does the elephant dance?
2. The difficulty of being good.
3. The Argumentative Indian. (Incomplete)
4. The Monk who sold his Ferrari
5. Sapiens
6. Poor Economics
7. My experiments with Truth (incomplete)
8. Glimpses of world history by JLN (incomplete)
9. The discovery of India (incomplete)
10. Some short stories of Leo Tolstoy, Anton Chekhov etc (available in iBook's public domain library) and Ramdhari singh Dinkar's books.

After exams I'm planning to read (as recommended to me by some friends) :
1. Atomic habit
2. As a man Thinketh
3. Zen

4. 1984

That is a very good start. Earlier we had a booklover's thread as well where people used to put summaries.

Atomic habit is a good read, but you will start to see patterns in the books. For start up people, from Zero to One is the best thing I have read so far. Not exactly for Civils people though.

Yes!!

I read the book translated in Hindi when I was  child. My dad's senior had written the hindi version of the book.

When I read it back then , I thought it was actually about animals in a farm.

i left ORN and came back home. trust me ORN is better for studies. At home, people think that you have no job. continuous disturbance and parents keep talking about covid 19 . everyone keeps watching tv at home. have lost all momentum. have not even written one test in a long time.

how are you guys dealing with this?

@Nikita This exam demands collective effort of family. Your whole family should be preparing for the exam.

Initially, I took time in adjusting, I used to think I'm not able to study because someone is gossiping or someone is watching TV or my relatives would be criticising behind my back, or my friends must be studying more than me etc. I blamed anything and everything for not able to concentrate.

Gradually I came to realise that I can't study because I have no plan.

By the way, there is some truth in all those arguments. So, I started taking steps.

1. Firstly, I conveyed my parents what this exam means to me. They had no idea what this exam demands. Since they understood my problems, it was an easy task to fix all the problems.
2. I made some rules about the schedule to watch TV.
3. I conveyed my relatives that I am preparing for exam from home and I am here to stay for long. The one thing that comes in the way is, your self doubt about you staying at home. After that no one has visited my home unnecessarily.
4. Then I got a separate room for me. A study table and a comfortable chair is a must.
5. Then gave responsibility to everyone to alert me according to routine. The routine is simple, slots of 4 hours and 2 hours for study and break respectively.
6. I joined online courses (for optional, current affairs and Prelims Preparatory classes) to have continuity.

That's all it needed.

I don't know about your situation, but hope this helps.

P.S.: I am not saying, I follow timetable religiously. Efficiency is never 100%, it is a natural law.

  1. Aunties are not coming in ORN/NRN.  Civil servants are serving people, BUT in my case, I am serving 'Future CIVIL SERVANTs" (Flatmates)....Cooking lunch/dinner (either one) for them. They are terrible at COOKING>may get malnourished in 21 days>may fail in CSAT (sudden crash in IQ/EQ level like SENSEX)...so taking my time out for them.
  2. No new material (CA/Tests/Magazine) in room since last 7-8 days...waah.
  3. PEN crisis....students are like "arrey yaar pen khatamm ho gaye'.
  4. Sometimes feel like Kaale paani kee sajaa----ORN jail (rooms)
  5. Many more.

"Yeh samay bhi gujar jaayega chill way mei. :)

@Neyawn/Anyone If one has to chose between Poor Economics and Good Economics for Hard Times, which one would you recommend ?

Aaj vo Snacky Packy (Block 4) ke samne, tamatar le raha tha ussi samay usko call aaya ki Shankar Road wala theka khula hai 2 ghantey ke liye. Maine bola bhaiya suno paise kaato jaldi, khana nahi khauga chalega bheed lag jayegi, main aur sabzi wala mazak karne lage, side me ek ladki khadi thi, she must be very amused at my dumbness ki theka kaise khul skta hai?!
Today is April Fools Day, matlab bas 5min ke liye nikla ghar se usme bhi bana diya mujhe.
This picture taken at 1930hrs, matlab haan main jakar dekh kar aaya.

p.s aisa mazak karne walo ko corona se darr nahi lagta kya?

I have not read the later , because I did not hear good reviews about it. It supposedly has lot of data. Probably brought out in a hurry to encash Nobel popularity. God knows.

I can vouch for Poor Economics. Again, as I have mentioned before , when these books came, ( like Imagining India ) they were nearly revolutionary in terms f the ideas they brought.

Most of the ideas now are commonplace. Still poor economics will explain to you why people in populated states build Miti storeyed houses but won’t even get it plastered or painted from outside. And a lot many other things.

thank you so much, it helped.

i have seen you on quest before? are u the same person? it is good to know that helpful people still exist on the forum. actually at my home my parents are watching ramayan and mahabharat two times a day, so the tv has become a big problem. while i feel bad for them because they have nowhere to go out, i cant let this hamper my studies. i have not touched a thing for prelims except doing the sfg tests, and now i have left it completely after my interviuew, becuase i got distracted.

and now with interview postponemnet , about 800 people or so are yet to appear for the interview. i am having a gut feeling that interview may happen on may 25th also and upsc will conduct prelims on may 31.

@root why am i not able to tag people here @ndn parinda

major changes witnessed in orn:

  • Closure of study halls
  • Closure of Bookstalls
  • No tea stalls but cigarettes are available in black market.
  • No parks no chit chattings in parks
  • Closure of all restuarant but some food stalls are available for home delivery.

No major changes in Daily life routines

  • People are coming for milks and vegetables frequently than before lockdown
  • Everyone trying their hands on cooking.
  • People are playing cricket like nothing happened(only minute population).
  • Dogs(a.k.a Human Companion) are having much say than before, they became orn ke raja.

The busy streets of Golchakar road which greeted anxious aspirant holding yellow covered booklets replaced the masked aspirants holding groceries(although now streets are neither busy nor empty).

@Nikita One personal suggestion from my side would be to try to listen to the TV sound while it display serials such as Ramayana/Mahabharata, in a similar way as most of us listen to some background music while studying. Even the paper setters are having a chill time at home during this lockdown period and this gives them an opportunity and enough time to dive deep into the syllabus and surroundings and frame questions of much better quality/difficulty than usual. No wonder if a question might come in Prelims from such mythology based programmes. Also, I have heard once that a geography question came based on some quiz given on a Chocolate wrapper. This is why I’m paying attention to the wrapper of each snack I’m having in this lockdown period. JK.
