Now that 1 week is over, it is time to shift focus to Mains. With barely 103 days left there is no time to waste.
@GloriousMess26I had to cut half page as i started writing on Demographic Profile initially. Then chaos
Paper 2 was tough man !
@STIt was tough for sure. I was able to write GS type dynamic answers but Bringing a sociologist and sociological terms for inter linking of river like questions is neither easy nor required according to me. Rest only marks will tell.
@STI read that you have been getting consistently 280+ in sociology.
What do you think really working for you in sociology?
Gs 1 and GS 3 I completed but GS 2 had to leave out the CAT question as I realised that it was asking something specific and I had barely any idea about it. Gs 4 I could only finish by answering a couple of questions succinctly, wasted too much time on the 3 random case studies which totally threw my timing off@GloriousMess26
@GloriousMess26u read ?
@paranthapijjathe normalisation between subjects inter alia itself accounts the difficulty because they do curve fitting, so don't worry, the only worry should be ur own subject toppers who distort the curve
@Sommerfeldplease explain in simple words

It seems Sociology is good optional to score 250+ marks.
Even after having so much knowledge, I am finding it difficult to achieve same in History. History pulled me down badly...
@Raja123said inMains 2019 Preparation and Discussion Thread:
UPSC does a percentile based normalisation, so that from every subject top 10% ( or some other number) have almost equal marks , hence if some optional has got very low scores and some very high , top 10 percentile of students marks would be so adjusted so that both become nearly same .
it is for the same reason one would observe that
number of students selected / number of students who gave the exam in each subject are nearly same across all the subjects
if you are in top percentile of your optional , dont worry your bad optional score would not be a disadvantage
@paranthapijjaIf someone with mathematics optional solve around 480 marks with all steps required. In that case, by scaling they didn't get full marks. Also someone with humanity optional, where multiple variables apply in checking process may get 230 marks. Both cases scaling apply to balance it. (As per my understanding in simple form).
@Jayson_BourneBut bro Sociology requires rigorous note making and updation of them. It seems easy but isn't with so much dynamics at society level and newspapers filled with news. Current updated content is rewarded in both Paper 1 and Paper 2
@paranthapijjajust try to get good score among your optional peers. Don't worry about Normalisation. It's ur individual performance in particular optional the matters.
PS: Less number of students in particular optional always helps, Less competition among peers.
@Raja123read about concept of Median on Wikipedia.
@MinimumwageKannada Literature
@STbro I disagree it's tough to be in in top 10%
Of 10 people which is only 1 whereas somewhat
Easier to be in top 10% of 100 which is 10
Lesser number of people taking an optional means
Higher competition as they will be taking it only when they
Are sure of success. That is why I think it is safer to choose
Optional like socio or geo where 3-4K people opt for it
Unless otherwise you are very good in some other optional
@Kira0705yup bro u r right.. What i meant implicitly u made it explicit.. Your strength in odd optional(not famous ones) can hugely work for ur advantage if u r really confident about it.
@STbc eska matlab agat easy optional main kam marks aaea marks aur b kamm ho skte hain
