I think Kohli's captaincy was good in tests but not in ODI and T20s. Whatever one says, trophies matter in cricket. And they are not mere function of luck. It needs calmness under pressure, most of all, which IMO Kohli lacks.

Leadership is not only keeping fit, working hard or leading by example, which btw Kohli is very proficient at. It also entails giving the right environment for every player to be their best. Leadership is not being the best flower of the garland, it is being the very thread which binds all flowers together.

These explanation videos' purpose (ergos? teleos?🤐) is to inspire awe among the aspirants and to catch them. We (those who wrote the mains) don't even come into the picture. Let them do the video 10 minutes after the exam, in real time and then I'll take it 😇.If they(vision lecturers) were so good, they would've cleared the exam in the first place.

If someone scores around 90 in each gs...

250 in optional..

And average in essay..


Then you have pretty decent chance of clearing mains..


So don't feel bad if you are not getting 110..120 in GS.. 90-95 is enough..

Issue is that people overestimate their performance

Which monthly mag are you referring to?

I used to refer to vision but it is just getting too overwhelming with all the news in shorts stuff and putting everything under the sun in it. What could be a suitable replacement?

I checked out the forum one. It was short around 70-80 pages and neatly organised. However, in the intro, it was written that it would act as a supplement to ca class students and mgp ones. My concern is that if I am not a ca course student, would I miss any important issue which would have been covered by their ca course?

@Declared_Dead clearing mains on border won't do any good. 

With 90s in gs and 250 optional ..one can only clear on border (purely from gen cutoff perspective). Competition is cut-throat and average scores won't take us anywhere.

However, we can never objectively assess whether we get 80,90 or 110 in GS, after exam. So, all we do is keep waiting. Same is with essay. One may get 140 or 110..and that difference is sufficient to get you in or out.

Last year, I gave my best attempt. But I could only clear mains by small margin. (95-100s in all GS and 250 in optional)Even with above avg interview score I fell short of final cutoff.


This year..my papers are very subpar.. nowhere near last time. So , I was absolutely disappointed. Yesterday I had a nightmare that I didn't clear mains. Experienced all the pain we usually feel when we don't clear, in sleep yesterday night, only to realise it's a bad dream after waking up.

But i realised I had enough..I told my family members that there is a very good chance of me not making and mentally preparing them to worst possible outcome. If anything good happens then it's only bonus.

I also decided to plan my life and career assuming for the worst possible outcome(plan B, as people say). So that I won't be clueless when it actually happens.

Things are so tight with this exam..that it's scary to expect anything good.  Lot of things has to fall in place to clear.

@leftfaithinmyselfare mains test series's (Vision or forum) scores correct measuring rod to expect the more or less same in UPSC ? asking as per your last year mains scores... how much variation?

@TheFinalStandI hope you clear this time also... This is my 2nd mains
last year scores were above of my expectations (not joined any test series of any optional or GS).. directly wrote in exam... (short of 12 marks in mains cutoff due to poor marks in essay 109, did blunder here).. but this time.. i consider my attempt as good (by ticking all the boxes as suggested by all for mains)

Since you have rated your performance as Best and very subpar.... what's your criteria ? are test series score relevant (offline and with 3 hrs rule) reflected in UPSC score

please throw light..

@Apollo11 Its like saas bahu serial of english landed aristocracy. One can keep one's brain in the almirah and need  only spinal cord to enjoy it :) 
However after hectic mains , these kind of series helps .Plus it will improve vocabulary and  one can learn how to speak sarcastically while being politely insulting  at the same time!
