@masteroptimist no problem. can u or anyone render you thoughts on doubt? firstly how many days do we have between this year prelim and mains i.e 2022 cycle and two, is it wise to join mains test series at this moment itself vs going for value addition in optional, making GS mains notes ( ihave almost none, rely on 365etc) and stasrting prelim prep as well because prelim is a weak point for me and taking the mains mocks scene to post prelims stage.

A humble suggestion from my phone..

Follow daily editorial analysis of any good channel daily and make notes from that..

It is immensely helpful in gs 2 n 3

I followed analysis of 1 year... Will share the marks and u can then judge the benefits...

The forum is so quiet ...

Atleast no nonsense utterances take place here as on tele group... utterly low level texts are posted there.. I don't feel like opening tele now...

Experts may please shed some light on expected mains cut off this year.. how did you find as compared to 2019/2020 paper...

I'm not expert but another helpless aspirant. I strongly feel the reduction in cutoff in 2020 was antithetical to level of difficulty w.r.t. 2019. In other words, 2019 papers were tougher in aggregate than 2020, but  what would have made a difference is the marking related instructions to the evaluators.

My understanding of papers is

1. essay :- difficult than 2020 ( it's not just abstract, the quality of abstraction also increased unnaturally)

2.gs 1 easier than 2020

3. gs2 easier than 2020 if we look at quality of questions and depth of demand of questions of 2020, deeper than Mariana trench ( not even joking)

4. gs3 2020 was a child's play, elite school students of 9th class would get those questions as summer assignment. 2021 was hopelessly difficult.   "exact who guidelines" in terms of hard statistics, blue led, gdp metrics, technical statistics of that air defence system, and specifics of "glasgow gamble" were "soul shattering". So no match (atleast from my perspective and from perspective of common sense)

5. gs 4 - pretty much same 13 questions were easy but that is balanced by unique demands in case studies, where course of action was usually not asked but mere analysis of options available in 5 pages posed some challenge.

6. language - language to sabka ho jata he

7. optional- apna apna dekh lo, mere psir ke to asaan aae the  is baar

overall i hate to say this, but 2021 seemed to be easier as conpared to 2020, just like 2020 was easier as compared to 2019.

but we have seen from falling cutoff from 2019 to 2020 despite falling difficulty level , that aggregate complexity of papers is not the decider. the decider is the "instructions" given to evaluators regarding marking. that is the talisman. therefore it's not much use speculating cutoff since that talisman is beyond us all.

Speculating cut off of a subjective paper is meaningless, as you will have to speculate on the marking pattern as well, unlike an objective exam like prelims. So it becomes speculation on speculation😅

Bro.. the cut off prediction is done assuming marking will be done as last year...

If any paper is checked strictly or marked liberally.. then cut off may rise or fall in the same proportion.. as all aspirants almost gain/lose similar marks...

Since you are experienced, I'd like to ask something. If marking is done liberally like in ethics 2019, would attempting all questions not put the aspirant at greater advantage in such situations than attempting one or two less but rest ones with precision and depth.

Liberal marking helps those candidates who have better command on the subject...

Eg. 2019 ethics.. toppers scored 150-160

Those who went unprepared scored around 100-110

This creates huge difference..

If marking is tough...

Low score is around 70...

Good score around 100... So overall it matters which subject is inflated and how strong u r in the subject..

If your subject is weak and checking is strict then it favours u and vice versa...

Yes.. please make notes of it..

The data collected from the editorials is interesting..

I prepared notes of relevant points and revised them twice before mains..

Separate sheets for data and vital reports..

Try to incorporate them in the answers wherever possible..

I have used around 50+ statistics figures in all the answers combined..

Also keep your eyes open for whatever is important and can be used in the answers.. never believe that you can remember just in a single reading without making any notes...I made this mistake earlier.. write it down and keep revising.. I even typed in whatsapp message if I could not write at that particular moment..

Sometimes luck also helps.. like in the hindi/English compulsory paper there was a passage on food productivity decline due to land degradation..

And I used the statistics given there in my geography optional paper.. question was precisely same.. food productivity decline and food security issues due to land degradation

So don't think than only conventional books and magazines can lead us to success..

Daily editorial analysis is most helpful of all.. particularly for psir optional students.. about 25% editorials are related to foreign affairs issues..

If you are English medium candidate then go through byjus daily the Hindu analysis...

It's remarkable..

I am not suggesting to join any byjus course.. daily editorial analysis and daily current affairs quiz is enough..

They are doing it since last 2-3 years.. I wish I had followed it earlier.. may be the score would have improved a lot.. but it is better late than never..

PS.. now they have started daily editorial analysis for hindi medium students as well ..

IN the GS 2 and GS 3papers, there are questions which have gone back to 5-6 years. now these questions are either conceptual or simply current affairs. My doubt is how do i go about changing studies and be able to handle these questions should a situation like this arise again. These were the questions that im talking about and they have a reasonable share of marks (if someone aims to do all 20 questions):

- GS3: GDP series , S400 , blue LED, Global AQGs

-GS2: 14th FC

now though i had fair knowledge of GDP series, i could not attempt it as well as i had expected for a simple reason, im aligned with magazines of past year only. same for s 400, i dont know why s400 suddenly became important. likewise for 14FC too.

Such questions are asked every year by upsc...

You cannot prepare fully for such questions..

So smart strategy will be to follow last one year current affairs thoroughly and not to worry about such questions .. u need to apply your common sense there to frame an average answer.. that would suffice I guess..

Same logic applies for pre.. if mitakshara type questions come.. all u can do is smart guess or skip.. but u can't and should not waste time trying to study the topics which are not covered by regular magazines/newspapers..
