Mains 2021 Result declared - In or Out?

guys i probably made a blunder in essay. Hands that rock the cradle rule the world I ignored hindi translation and misinterpreted it. I thought rock means destroy, so I talked about population control for global welfare and all. Rocking the cradle I thought population control. :(

real is rational rational is real was intellectually most challenging. I am happy I did not know it was written by hegel despite being psir student (which is good since hegel is not part of psir syllabus and if someone frm psir still studies it then god bless them) as that would have clouded my creative imaginations. This also enabled me to start creatively instead of bringing hegel's ugly head in the introduction itself. However I did link  thinkers indulging in investigations on reason and reality including hegel in my essay but went much beyond his stupid philosophy. This also helped me to create my own philosophy which I put forward as :-

"Knowledge is the principal threat to castles of imagination"

5.5k views
@D503 exactly hegels dialectical materialism being philosophical basis of marx but marx being inspired by faeurbach for historical materialism and unlike hegel who believes consciousness being basic of all historical change and force for all social institutions, marx believed its your existence which determines your consciousness  i.e. material conditions of life determine historical change which is driven by mode of economic production all that is good. but if we learn real is ................ by hegel such in depth study of hegel is unnecessary and even counter-productive

@Declared_Dead  one 10 marker in gs1 , one 10 and 15 marker each in gs2, 2 ten marker and one 15 marker in gs3 and one 15 marker in optional total 85,  last time I attempted all questions each and every in all 9 papers  even language (lol) yet missed interview call by 6 marks. Despite attempting all in gs1 i got 70, 72 in gs2 and 79 in gs3.  This time I straightaway left questions i had no idea, eg. earn and learn scheme, american equality, gdp changes, led, who air lasagna and tried my best to attempt easy ones or moderate ones better. I personally feel in an exam of such large magnitude focus should more be on quality. missing few questions here and there doesnt matter.

further in 10 or 15  marker question where you had less knowledge or time to attempt them you dont actually miss 10 or 15 marks but 3or 4 marks. So we should not inflate the magnitude of loss that is accrued due to skipping the questoins. In short i dont think personally based on my experience that missing questions worth 160 marks is a big issue "Provided" other questions have a good decent quality. so dont feel guilty bro cheer up :D

but yeah if you have missed one whole essay out of two, then its entirely different story hehe

jab koi kisi 10 marker prashna ko gyan ya samay ke abhaav hetu chhodta he to "Technically" wo 10 mark ka prashna chhodta he lekin "Actually" wo 3 ya 3.5marks ka chhodta he, utna jitna use us prashna me milta gar wo us prashna ko attempt kar pata.

As plato says reality is shadow of ideas. estimate of loss as 10 mark is a reality which is merely a shadow of idea i.e. the true reality which is 3 or 3.5 marks. (application of philosophy to achieve some mental peace :D  )

@sstarrr 1. prepare limited material well, refer to anudeep durishetty or other toppers for material related guidance anudeep has excellent blog 2. take good sleep a night before exam even if that comes at cost of revising pending spectrum hands down 3. have confidence in yourself in exam, bouncers are there but it's on you to decide whether you fall prey to them or enjoy the advantage of lower cutoff they bring with them 4. when you make notes of mock test or any notes  of newspaper etc. for pre, remember that you will have to revise them many times so keep them very very very very concise 5.in exam i took a 10 minute break and did self counseling, motivated myself it may sound filmy but it worked in 2021 pre 6 don't panic if you aren't able to recall something just skip those questions and attempt at last like the "lender of last resort one" 7 have the faith that there are enough questions in the paper to let you sail through, don't let your performance in moderate and easy questions be affected by the intimidation accrued due to difficult, random or factual questions that are sprinkled here and there in the paper

Unpopular opinion : I hate drawing diagrams except in geography questions because it is hard to put down definitions in that diagram. In a circle, i can draw different sectors and put the points..but there is no space to explain them. Also perhaps .....the paper is descriptive.

agreed, infact there have been many toppers clearing exam without drawing flowchart and diagrams. i think evaluator is too mature to be tricked by diagrams here and there. if content is up to the mark, these rudimentary things don't matter

well he built the team in his own image and I feel there is a lack of natural leadership after him. I’m not sure KL Rahul will be that indispensable player himself who will be the long term leader. Like when Dhoni was getting old we all could see the natural leader emerging in Virat…now there is a massive vacuum. I think we as Indian fans should expect a period of slump before things fully settle

"natural leader" my foot.  Infact india is suffering from natural leadership deficit since dhoni because kohli himself is as incompetent a captain as a man can be, and even worse as a leader. when will you come out of this GREAT KOHLIAN ILLUSIONARY SPHERE mate. The records in international championship are in front of you. This BHAKTI in cricket has to stop.

Rohit was having below par career and was not a team regular till 2013 champions trophy. At that time Kohli appeared to be a natural choice for captain.

He has a stellar record as a captain and a player but the issue is he did not focus on nurturing players. Thus the chaos which we are witnessing today.

Anyone having trouble retaining attention in studies...? Clocking 12-14 hours during mains weeks has come down to 1-2 hours max now. Last year I wasted 3-4 months in similar situation so I can see a disaster in making but cant avert it...

History repeating itself first as tragedy and now as farce....

make daily plans and for a week or two sleep for 9+ hours. This will have two benifits, one you will wake up relaxed and two the guilt of oversleeping will hopefully encourage you to give most of rest hours to productive work.

Just to give you the example, see the picture which was clicked by me. The chimney is there on the left side but emitting harmful gases from there would mean that the data captured will nullify any work on pollution. Solution? Just emit all the gas from the pellets, being put on the conveyor belt directly into the atmosphere during the early shift. That can be seen on the right side of the picture. Those gases have harmful SO2(reason of their yellowish colour), Pb, Cd, CO, Co2, PM 2.5.10 everything.

Impact of digital technology as reliable source of input for rational decision making is a debatable issue. Critically evaluate with suitable example.

How you attempted it in such haste. It says impact being debated. And, then puts critically evaluate and examples too in question header.

in positives i wrote about"anticipatory governance", use in planning and policy formulation, eg disaster management by hazard mapping done by digital modelling tools, etc in negatives i wrote about how lack of digitalsation is itself a problem in India, issues of data security as well as obvious limitations of digital technology. I wrote about failure of bhawantar bhugtan Yojana in madhya pradesh due to lack of digitisation of land records.

i wrote more but I'd be honest i am unable to recall anything else rn

A general doubt

In GS answers ,I answered the core aspect and maybe add another dimension either social/economic in most question that's the maximum dimensions I must have presented

Some model answers suggest all PESTEL dimensions , will that approach fetch more marks even when questions were too specific ?

it is to be remembered that folks preparing model answers take use of internet, spend hours researching, discuss and make answers working in group.

I strongly feel such facilities are not legally available to people writing the actual exam. further pestel has her own limitations. for instance it is difficult to write about problem of sexual harrasment at workplace dimension in question of blue led or talk about climate change in question related to terrorism. it is likewise difficult to talk about art and culture dimension in question of cbi, as it is equally difficult to mention about space science dimension in question of nhrc.

Don't ever compare to people making model answers. they possess the luxuries we don't and ever won't.

Which paper did this question come in? 😂 I don't even remember writing an answer for a question like this fml

Retrospectively, I think I'm being too hard on my self. We wrote ~110 answers and hundreds of mock answers before that. Just about having 7/11 minutes to think of a question and absolutely no time to go back to think about a question after one test is over. Pretty natural imo 😂 especially general questions.

I read a very beautiful quote in a game called "duet" which was :-

"Nothing else matters just this moment".

After writing upsc cse main I realised the quote wasn't essentially romantic

@captainhaddock Part of GS4

Damn. GS4 seems like a dream. More like a hangover. A terrible one.

Gs4 is as such designed to be "The Great Headache" . the way it's created, it will continue to haunt cse aspirants year after year. Whether the question is of time management or about cent percent assurance of having written decent answer, aspirants will never get a clear breakthrough to these questions no matter how hard they try. why? because the paper, it's syllabus, it's flavour everything is designed in such manner. It's so subjective so fluid so unique paper, in many ways it's worthy of being termed as a "Humble Tyrant"  :)

I wonder how members here can recall the points they have written in the answer sheet..

I don't remember if I came across this question 😂😂

people are able to recall their points only when they know what they have written which usually happens when one is able to manage time well. if one has written those answers in "great time deficit situation" it's not possible to recall much possibly because in matters of exigency it's far better to act than to think(hannah arendt).

The forum is so quiet ...

Atleast no nonsense utterances take place here as on tele group... utterly low level texts are posted there.. I don't feel like opening tele now...

Experts may please shed some light on expected mains cut off this year.. how did you find as compared to 2019/2020 paper...

I'm not expert but another helpless aspirant. I strongly feel the reduction in cutoff in 2020 was antithetical to level of difficulty w.r.t. 2019. In other words, 2019 papers were tougher in aggregate than 2020, but  what would have made a difference is the marking related instructions to the evaluators.

My understanding of papers is

1. essay :- difficult than 2020 ( it's not just abstract, the quality of abstraction also increased unnaturally)

2.gs 1 easier than 2020

3. gs2 easier than 2020 if we look at quality of questions and depth of demand of questions of 2020, deeper than Mariana trench ( not even joking)

4. gs3 2020 was a child's play, elite school students of 9th class would get those questions as summer assignment. 2021 was hopelessly difficult.   "exact who guidelines" in terms of hard statistics, blue led, gdp metrics, technical statistics of that air defence system, and specifics of "glasgow gamble" were "soul shattering". So no match (atleast from my perspective and from perspective of common sense)

5. gs 4 - pretty much same 13 questions were easy but that is balanced by unique demands in case studies, where course of action was usually not asked but mere analysis of options available in 5 pages posed some challenge.

6. language - language to sabka ho jata he

7. optional- apna apna dekh lo, mere psir ke to asaan aae the  is baar

overall i hate to say this, but 2021 seemed to be easier as conpared to 2020, just like 2020 was easier as compared to 2019.

but we have seen from falling cutoff from 2019 to 2020 despite falling difficulty level , that aggregate complexity of papers is not the decider. the decider is the "instructions" given to evaluators regarding marking. that is the talisman. therefore it's not much use speculating cutoff since that talisman is beyond us all.

5.5k views

Has anyone of you improved more than 100 marks in mains?

Do you know any toppers who were able to do this without skipping an attempt..?

Scoring 100+ in GS is not so easy..

It sounds easy but needs a lot of hard work to reach 3 digit figures...

can totally relate. missed interview call by 6 marks because of gs papers in 2020 ruined them all despite godly performance in essay and above average performance in optional. never trust gs, they are bewafa papers. essay and optional are marriage material, trust them give them time and efforts and they will be by your side even in tough times. hoping to atleast experience interview this time, can't say anything beyond that because not convinced about gs this time again :(

I disagree with you, repeaters have luxury of experience and meticulous evaluation of their experience alongwith the knowledge of their marks in each subject facilitates performance gauging

Speculating cut off of a subjective paper is meaningless, as you will have to speculate on the marking pattern as well, unlike an objective exam like prelims. So it becomes speculation on speculation😅

Bro.. the cut off prediction is done assuming marking will be done as last year...

If any paper is checked strictly or marked liberally.. then cut off may rise or fall in the same proportion.. as all aspirants almost gain/lose similar marks...

Since you are experienced, I'd like to ask something. If marking is done liberally like in ethics 2019, would attempting all questions not put the aspirant at greater advantage in such situations than attempting one or two less but rest ones with precision and depth.

completely agree, apologies for making mistake, gratitude for correction

@Declared_Dead  another question broda, i wrote 15 markers first then 10 markers so obviously 10 marker answers were not so charming and attractive, do you think a thing like first impression exists in evaluation?

4.3k views
@Akkku my font size is usually big. and increases as i increase speed. so in most questions, page filling was there

i also believe in filling pages being a engineering student

4.3k views
@masteroptimist i feel that in 3hours, there is no time to think. pick up pen and start writing. now if i know a question well, the relevant points usually start blinking in my mind which are incorporated in answer. In other questions, im hard wired to write intro body conclusion. By the time intro is done, some points usually enter my point. That will make answer average (i think). But in any case, all questions are to be answered.

don't go with extreme statement pal. people have cleared this exam and scored first rank despite leaving few questions. people have failed to enter interview despite answering all. your extreme statement may misguide other fresh aspirants so be careful with choice of words. your last sentence is extreme.

4.2k views
@Capedcrusader1 While attempting all questions is always advisable, it is not a necessity. I mean leaving any question for want of time is unpardonable but leaving questions for which you have simply no idea is not a sin as such. I know people who have gotten top 50 ranks with 18/19 attempts in GS.

that's my point. extreme statements tend to confuse freshers who may take such unnecessary sentences seriously and brain-train themselves to attempt all. Ira singhal mam scored first rank and she concedes that she skipped questions she didn't know.

my whole point is to avoid extreme statements not only in prelims exam but also in real life.

4.2k views
@masteroptimist also, if you dont attempt like 2 questions completely, you basically left arounf 4x2 =8 marks per paper if you left 10 marker and likewise for 15 marker. Now, while writing an average answer is not a herculean task in itself, completing all 20 questions is a huge difficulty. Unless you answered those 18 questions to the best possible way there is (by taking more time ofcourse), leaving questions is nothing less than suicidal. and exceptions are not rule.

forget leaving questions, even failing entire exam isn't suicidal, there's life beyond this exam. let's agree to disagree

4.2k views
In some questions I have not written conclusion, mostly 10 marker. Will that affect my marks?

if you write in paragraphs, last paragraph automatically becomes conclusion :p

4.8k views

Nothing to worry..

Time crunch is so much that we tend to forget key points sometimes leave alone the conclusion..

In the microfinance question.. I knew that malegam committee is related to it and I should mention it.. so I wrote in the question paper to write it in the body of the answer..

And guess what..

When I finished the paper and submitted it I saw the question paper again to realise that I missed writing it..

So what is done cannot be undone.. that's the beauty of the exam..

It's a race which u must enjoy and not feel pain due to minor shortcomings

now i realise how tough competition is. malegam didn't even cross my mind😂😂

Hello All, 2022 is my last attempt. Never qualified prelims. Largely due to less mock and less time devoted to it.

I am a working professional. Have covered all GS paper syllabus roughly. Made notes of some topics (mostly GS2 and GS3). Have written 8 mock tests of Vision , but not in stipulated time.

Should I be focussed on prelims only from now? I am in dilemma because even after pre, 3 months are quite less.

Any suggestions ? Mains written/qualified people ?

if you have never cleared prelims as you mentioned and this is your last attempt as you mentioned and if you are still thinking about mains and getting confused as you mentioned then god bless you.

anyway, can anyone help me with ethics "examples from personal life" part of the ethics deal. is there any topper notes from where i can get "examples from personal life".

bhai there is a topper anudeep durishetty. he has a wonderful blog on internet called conquering gs. i got some help from him in ethics.

@masteroptimist You told about writing in paras. How was gs score ? And, all questions in para ? subheads ?

I was just joking, I never told write in para, I just said ""If"" you write in paragraph, last para automatically becomes conclusion

@masteroptimist how was your essay this year since all topics were abstract? Did anudeep's book help you?

How was my essay? Only ""Insiders"" know that. btw insiders also know when the life on earth will end, next financial crisis arise or who came first hen or egg.

@Declared_Dead Exactly, such precise infos show the credibility. 🤐 One such insider who is also admin in such groups and in past has given credible info told me about seeing his answer copies. 😌😌

I m unable to decipher whether it is statement in support of insiders or mockery of them...

That's not a statement in support. Clearly not, pal.

With the amount of absurdity regarding copy evaluation being discussed, someone should also come up and claim that the examiners roll dice and give marks accordingly. :)

i have already watched it before, it's useless because

1.that man didn't tell anything new

2. he was talking about optional whereas people are more concerned about gs

In 2019, i was confident of gs 1, was hoping to get 95, instead got 65, gs 2 went pathetic was expecting 60-70 and got 65 here too. There is simply no way I still can't compare how both the papers got similar marks.

But i have learnt one thing, that it's useless to think about marks once it's over. Sometimes feeling of elation after attempting may also be false. Better to simply focus on the task ahead and work for that, ie pre and interview prep, but we all know it's easier said than done.

What factors made u believe that you will score well in gs 1 in 2019..

How were your papers in 2020 and 2021...

I also came across a post somewhere.. the candidate was expecting 100+ .. drew 3 world maps for better presentation.. ended up getting 57 in gs 1..

""""""""drew 3 world maps for better presentation.. ended up getting 57 in gs 1.."""""""

to a person like me who drew zero flow charts, maps or diagrams in any paper, this gives me HOPE 😂😂

I believe it is easy to identify certain questions as tough.. like S400, GDP, WHO

But the other questions which we believe to have written well are not so simple and direct either..

It is the impression of familiarity with the questions which make us categorise the questions as tough or easy.. but marking pattern may be otherwise

totally agree, element of familiarity strongly shapes our opinions. we tend to consider familiar questions as automatically and hopelessly easy just like ***ghar ki (tandoori)murgi daal barabar(caves)***

First mains ,gave just iasbaba free mock a week before mains and few pyq on my own

In the few mocks I wrote ,I was struggling to complete 17 questions (marks were around 80) due to time constraints

But on the day of exam, I started attempting from 15 m and then 10m in GS ,in essay I just alloted 5 min for structure formation

Surprisingly I completed all questions on time and had 9-10 minutes remaining during which I added any missing terms ,underlining double underlining heading and terms like it's done in school

I'm sure that neither quality of answers nor handwriting was relevant and legible enough

The person sitting next to me gave a weird look like how the heck  you got time to underline stuff even in Ethics😬

I know the marks cannot be predicted but I'm really afraid on finishing fast my papers although the average content and legible handwriting was there ,did anyone else experience similar surprising powers in exam hall ?

This is great..

You are the first candidate I m coming across who claimed to have completed the papers 10 minutes before the scheduled time..

You can teach us on time management..

I also had the fortune of completing my second optional 10 minutes before time and guess what my score was below 100 in it 😂😂

What was their mistake in this..

Think about those whose last attempt got affected adversely..

This is gross injustice.. mains should be conducted again for those who have solid evidence of covid positive and missed the exam.

and what about those who gave the exam? is it correct to let them wait and waste their time for a few who missed the exams probably for not following covid protocols else how will you get covid obviously?

Excuse me folks..

I m not trying to be arrogant here..

Someone asked about my mains ,,so I said..

I m not claiming any rank.. I am guessing my performance in quantitative manner.. that's all..

I have tried my best this year..

Already scored 135, 141 in essay in earlier attempts..

258 in optional..

So please don't blame me for being overconfident..

I have said what I feel about my performance..

I don't mean to hurt sentiments of anyone..

I don't understand one thing..

People saying that I ruined my paper.. everyone gives sympathy to the person..

GS1 main

Ab balak log vishvaas karte nahin toh main bata deta hun kaun se chhodde

1. Persian Literary sources 15 marks

2. Indian Phlio and tradition 15 marks

3. PALA period (10marker)

4.circumpacific zone (10 marker)

Yeh waale

Apologies it was 50 marks . I accept the error

I think leaving a few questions may actually have a positive impact. it may show you as honest person not messing up with questions you don't and also make evaluator's task easy . obviously not glorifying skipping questions but don't find it making any sense to attempt them if you are not prepared. devoting that time to other questions has always been my stand.

ok on basis of my understanding on this issue, I think dkt probably points towards a person who claimed to have scored very very very good in upsc main. i have reason to believe that probably that person didn't score as well as they claimed. also I feel before results were declared, that person showed passion in claiming that his papers went well.

@Philip_Marlowe HISTORY optional main 280 ka daawa .

history optional is the easiest subject of the world, I may ace it with 21% consciousness. psir is most difficult subject of the multiverse, you cannot capture it... even "Lucy" with her 100 percent consciousness couldn't do it. the reason is because of the "intrinsic creative intellect considerations" that dominate the scoring parameters especially in paper 2 of international relations. in subjects like history we answer same boring questions of past but in psir we essentially deal with "hyperdynamic fragments of fluid realities" that continue to alter the discourses, perceptions and aspects of continuity of life. It's this playing the games of time and attempting to design future predictions fusing past and present with logic and knowledge that requires in-depth talent. History can be aced with books PSIR requires not the books but you to think afresh and create new intellectual content. PSIR is god level subject, history at best, may be a spartan.

why is russia not worried about economic sanctions

I assume its Putin's ego now. He thought the entire operation can be done in 2-3 days( ie. replacing the current regime with a pro-Russian Government). He wouldn't have imagined that the entire West would come together so quickly either. However the War has stretched and it doesn't look like ending soon. His reputation has already took a severe hit and he can't turn back now. Besides how much would the sanctions personally impact him?

Russians would be hit hard obviously. The Central Bank might hold for sometime but the economy will fail without a doubt. The Citizens are protesting but all that may not have any short term impact.

Western nations shouldn't sanction Russia because this will affect the "Human Rights" of innocent Russian citizens who weren't actually involved. West would be committing great sin if it's sanctions affect day to day lives of russian citizens. And probably Putin understands that.

With due respect I Disagree. I believe the best practitioners of IR are the ones who know history. In fact i think IR shouldn't even be a separate subject rather people with command over history will always do a better job. Ye sare concepts like Thucydides trap, pincer strategy, middle kingdom complex, ye sab history pdke hi pta chalte hai. If you want to defeat your enemy you gotta know your enemy's history. History is the master subject. No matter how much the world changes, the lessons of history will always be relevant. Ta hi toh upsc ne essay bhi diya history repeat wala 😆 har jgah history hi to pdte hai or likhte hai. Bas khi political history likhte hai, khi economic history.

but i tried to use lots of original sensational keywords in my post  i thought shabashi milegi😂😂😂, btw that was a complete torll. i understand history is a tough and scientific subject. you cannot beat around the bush there.

This is a valid argument. Large anti-war protests r taking place in Russia. Police has cracked down upon those protestors. They r already suffering due to dictatorship of putin. Sanctions will only increase their sufferings. On one hand west is claiming themselves as protector of human rights in Ukraine  On the other hand they r committing human rights violation in russia.

So what should the West do? Kadi ninda?

Obviously kadi ninda  Other option is to sanction russua and destroy lives and human rights of innocent russian citizens while rich and powerful people like Putin aren't one percent affected by them.

“The battle for Ukraine is a battle for Europe. If Putin is not stopped there, he will go further,” Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis warned last week in a joint news conference with U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.

Looks like Lithuania doesn't think that way. In world history, AJP Taylor has assessed the actions of Hitler as a gamble. He states that more the West (mainly France and UK) tried to avoid confronting him, the more encouraged he became, and started his next invasion. The appeasement policy was one of the main reasons for World war 2. When another mad man, who even threatens nuclear annihilation, invades a democratic country, "we should not do anything but only condemn his actions"  doesn't appear a wise thing to me.

"west has no locus standi here it's between these two nations": yeah, so let them fight it out right? Wow! Didn't know there are still supporters for the law of the jungle.

look pal your answer exposes your bias and grand ignorance on the issue. you didn't counter my logical arguments by logic but by some weird statements or weird statements of "rhetoricians"

BATTLE FOR UKRAINE IS NOT BATTLE FOR EUROPE.  Lithuanian leader is just into rhetoric mode. it knows nato will defend it but sadly you don't.

well i don't support violence or war but an eye for an eye will make whole world blind. you write it in gs4 and essay but fail to apply it beyond. anyways you were asking for solution, here are they

1. Ukraine must not be allowed to become nato member and if it is, a SECURITY GUARANTEE to Russia with adequate and clear clauses in it be provided.

2. Ukraine should engage with russia instead of begging the west.

3. Ukraine must concede because continuing the war will only hurt human rights of Ukrainian citizens and russian soldiers more and more.

russia isn't attacking Ukraine for "PLEASURE". I'm against all war but Putin's side should also be heard, where is your tolerance?

would you support it if  turkey helped directly to Pakistan in conflict with india in 1965 or 1971 on the some false pretexts like "something" in danger?

No sensitive person wants violence or would support it. But quoting some old man and trying to fabricate and link something with hitler is pure class stupidity.

Putin may not be doing a moral thing, I concede. But tell me one thing, what options did the west leave for him? Putin doesn't believe in "Jab aag lagehi tab kua khodenge"

American Nuclear long range cruise missiles  in NATOfied Ukraine are not just a possibility but a very strong one.

So abandon rhetoric, embrace logic.

"My logical arguments" and "your ignorance and biases"! Nice way to counter. Make it personal right? Sorry, doesn't work with me. Read the comment again and you may understand it.

I  thought it would be clear and rational. But sorry I'm not prepared for the rhetoric fight.

Anyways I'm glad India didn't uphold your view at the UN  and that should clear a lot of dust about your understanding of the issue..

I guess it is highly faulty to compare Hitler and Putin, Hitler belonged to a different era which was nearing its end- the era of imperialism and colonialism. His policy was essentially expansionist towards the east, he was softer(comparatively) towards France and UK and ultimately, the concept of total war was quite widely applied in initial years to the Eastern front, thats why we have records of attrocities in Poland, Soviet republics, eastern Europe and not in France.

Putin on the other hand is fighting this as a defensive war, Ukraine has been marred with various revolutions in the past 20 years. Essentially Ukraine is divided east and west along political lines, west Ukraine favours close contact( business and military) with the western countries while east U favours it's old ties with Russia and old Soviet nations.

2004- orange revolution, pro west yanukovich(pardon spellings here) won after reelection was ordered.

2010- new president yanukovich was elevated with pro Russian leanings

2014- euromaiden protests were organised, and democratically elected govt was outsted. Reason was yanukovich dint agree to sign economic agreement for close association with EU while stopping eco agreement already in place with Russia. (It is said that it was widely supported by the western Intel agencies- if we see wiki pages this is called revolution of dignity).

2014 Russo-Ukraine war essentially a response to this 'coup', leading to annexation of Crimea, as Russia feared losing access to the black sea if Ukraine entered EU and subsequently NATO.

Now the existence of NATO itself is questionable since cold war ended, in addition steady expansion of NATO eastwards has been seen to be a threat to Russia.

The present war is in the background that Ukraine has been seeking membership of EU and NATO, though it hasn't been granted. Now if NATO gains access to Ukraine where does it leave Russia? It will have missiles pointing at Moscow which could reach it within 5-7 mins. Does that sound like Russia should allow that to happen?? We(Indians) are concerned about Chinese string of pearls for precisely this reason - to have an enemy up so close and at multiple points.

There is a precedent like this in history too, 1962 -cuban missile crisis. Where Soviets placed nuclear missiles in Cuba, in response to NATO nuclear missiles in Italy and Turkey. By logic if USA had an agreement with turkey and Italy to place missiles which were sovereign nations then so did Soviet union and Cuba, hence no nation should have problen. But USA precipitated nuclear crisis to prevent nuclear weapons within 90miles of it's coast. The fact is no great powers like to have interference within its sphere of influence. And in Europe, which has primarily based it's inter-country relations on the concept of Balance of power since the French revolution, loss of Ukraine's neutrality will lead to dangerous weakening of Russia.

I don't think Russia is wrong in its security  concerns, i don't think war was not an option either. It is a calculated risk, just like Hitler had thought of quick victory in 1941, his famous words were " we just need to knock the door and the whole communist structure would come stumbling down", Putin is hoping for a quick victory and change of Ukraine govt and some security aggreements. Let's see how it plays out.

While we may profess sovereignty, democracy and peaceful negotiations , the game is far bigger here than that.

We Indians should rather protect our interests which are at the moment with Russia and quite proudly advocate "kadi ninda" than go for grandstanding and lose a valuable ally.

In the essay"the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world" is about motherhood and socialization. But I haven't mentioned anything about it. Am I doomed?

Whether you are doomed or not is for the evaluator to decide. But "i strongly feel" that power of motherhood and it's great positive impact on the world (by virtue of which it "rules the world") was the core theme or atleast one of the core themes of that essay and thus absolutely non negotiable.

Also, it's a myth that merely by filling all 12 pages of essay one can be assured of triple digit score in essay. In any case however, I pray to god that you do score triple digit score in essay paper.....

  3. Character of an institution is reflected in its leader.

Ppl with previous experience of mains

How much of variation did you see in actual marksheet from your expected conservative marks?

What/How are you improving on since then?

All the best

I have written 5 mains so far..

GS1 and GS4 are always less than expected for me. GS2 and GS3 are usually as expected.

Essay ..my first attempt (2017), i expected 150 , as i believed i wrote  really good essays on agriculture and women(good old days , where no mandatory philosophical topics are there). I got 110, while top score that year is 175. There after my essays got stagnant in range of 125-130, which are more or less on expected lines.

With respect to improvement, my GS and essay scores are almost similar from my 2nd attempt, irrespective of all the value additions, answer writing practice etc etc. Average marks in GS2 and GS3, below average in GS1 and GS4 .

If my optional clicks..i used to get interview call or if it tanks i couldn't clear mains. And i could never predict my optional score since it's humanities. It fell down from 280(2018) to 210 (2019) to 250(2020)

With increasing attempts the variation between your expectations and actual scores reduce, atleast for GS. Optional tho.. Only God knows .😂

apke optional scores me bahut variation he. ye kauna moody optional liya he apne.

Generally it is said that even if an essay topic is related to ones optional, one must not heavily use knowledge of optional. Keep essay very simple.

However this year topics were highly philosophical. So in such topics we should write more like gs or make essay highly philosophical?

yaar mera manna he ke general essay likhna choice nhi majboori ban jata he. dekho philosophy likhna bhi art and science he. agar hm trained nhi he to chance he hm offtrack chale jae . so philosophy thodi bhut jarur ho lekin phir apne desi system me aana thik lgta he.essay ke topic ko bar bar repeat krna bhi ek tactical mastercraft he jisse ye impression jae ke ap offtrack nhi ho. Ek nadi ki jeevan yatra jaisa structure kal kal dhwani jesa dynamism ho aur chamchamata conclusion ho Anti climatic na ho to maza a jae.

around 19% is the probability of a UR clearing mains if we consider all outcomes equally likely.

(285x2.44)/(9200x0.4)

not counting categories who clear in UR cutoff. then prob will fall.

this prob is all but a farce but for all its worth this is what one can say about numbers in terms of selection

Thinking that itself is kind of scary..

Vijaynagar bhi isi period main tha yaar , unhone bhi kuch nahin kiya yaar ; Similarly odisha ke rulers bhi the ; unhone bhi nahin kiya !!!

Rahi baat inke aane se pehle bhi koi aisi koi science and tech ka zabardast innovation nahin chal rha tha ,purane texts par commentary kar rhe the

you mean inke pehle matlab ancient india me science and tech ka koi zabardast innovation nahi chal raha tha.

Ese kaise history optional me score karoge bro

astronomy, medicine, mathematics me trigonometry, zero, algebra, geometry, language me ashtadhyai by panini, sushruta, charaka, bhaskaracharya, aryabhatta etc etc, mughalo ke defence me ancient Indian progress ko mat ignore kro bhai.

Vijayanagar ne bhi kuch nahi kia, odisha ne bhi theek he lekin ye chhote kingdom the delhi sultanate and mughal were central power in india. Mughalo ne kai bar inhe bhi invade kia akbar ne khandesh for example. Aur agar tum inse compare karte ho, to ek bat batao ncert me inhe proportionate coverage kyu nahi milta.

Tumne odisha ke rulers ki baat kahi, ncert me kitni jagah mention he odisha rulers ka? Unhone bhi to jagannath, lingaraj temple sun temple dia.

me bas itna hi kahunga, mughals ko achche ke liye glorify karte ho to unke Great Failures ke lie responsible bhi thehrao. Ankhe band karke mughalo ki bhakti theek nahi.

@RaGa I don't know what has been hidden. What people want in history books : how much muders did Mughals did or what ? Even a 6th grader is taught how Ghazni, Ghori and Aurangzeb did so much destruction to hindu temples etc. Don't know what would a rightist historian want to do more to this.

Moreover, the medieval times were different. Suppression and Repressions were different. Modern morality and securalism, which themselves are modern ideas, must not be stretched that far to apply to them.

What the rightists then want is just divide the faultlines more just to legitimise the march towards their dream of la la land!
How the whole controversy created over Aurangzeb road.

Further, people are so excited to know the source of what a teacher says in classroom but the same people would justify the jewels of cloud 🤣🤣 technology etc etc bestowed by the great leader.

Moreover, this is just a well scripted attempt to dismantle institutions and make them pro-Hindu/right. What they tried doing in JNU, JAMIA etc. The govt officials being involved. Ist step is create madness over social media. Second is IT raids. Never saw govt machineries being misused to this extent.

Akkku Raja NCERT says (Me nahi keh rah ncert ke bol he) :-

"On losing power in the State, the Congress party began a ‘liberation struggle’

against the elected government. The CPI had come to power on the promise of

carrying out radical and progressive policy measures. The Communists claimed

that the agitation was led by vested interests and religious organisations.

In 1959 the Congress government at

the Centre dismissed the Communist

government in Kerala under Article 356

of the Constitution. This decision proved

very controversial and was widely cited

as the first instance of the misuse of

constitutional emergency powers. "

@Admgenalanezh I am only commenting on those toppers’ jinki multiple copies I’ve seen (at least 2 from each paper) and yes, I do think they write well. By well I don’t mean jargon and something extraordinary.. but  better than the rest in terms of content, composition, relevance. (eg- Vaishaka (Singh?), Akshat Jain, Ria Dabi, Tina Dabi (acc to 2015 standards), Ankita (AIR 3 this year).
However, I absolutely don’t agree with the test series ‘best copies’ that vision / forum upload. Sometimes I think people have written those answers after going through the coaching solutions… coaching people want to stick to very narrow conventional content. And for some reason they love it when the innovation is shown in the way of writing (flow charts etc) giving content a backseat. So many times when I’ve scored less in test series and went on to compare with best copies, I felt like the evaluation has been really average & borderline unfair.

please elaborate on "according to 2015 standards"

@aa12 I think  Kanishak Kataria also said something similar about coaching evaluation. Another example is Chandrajyoti Singh. If you see her answers, they’re far from the conventional ‘coaching template’, both in optional as well as GS. Ends up getting AIR 28 with History !

i read in his blog he scored around 60s in gs3 vision ias test series ended up getting 117 in actual gs3

60 was in first test. In second it was between  105 to 110.

His blog says he scored 67 in first gs3 and 79 in gs3. Tumare claim ka source kya he?

Ya phir ese hi hawa me baatein karke fake news faila rahe ho?

@masteroptimist but why is Kanishak is even a case study here. He was a first attempter then, somebody who was too absorbed in maths. He must have improved through tests itself as is visible in his non-completion of answers. Otherwise, if you look at toppers scores they are good only. 🥺🥺 Harsh truth.

After going through topper copies, do you guys really feel that they write much much above the average..?

Barring few , i believe ,after analysing toppers copies, that the one important factor to success in this exam is ..

Consistency in answers ( most of the toppers maintain a uniformity in 16+ answers in terms of structuring etc.)

Eg: you either underline all answers or you don't underline at all ...

Similarly hand writing, initial answers have good presentation and later answers are just scribbled .

These things show inconsistency in our thought process. It shows people are reactive, panicking under pressure.

Uniformity across answers represents a stable mind, that the person is in control of paper and is definitely well rewarded.

It's difficult to maintain the consistency and flow across answers in all papers and requires good amount of mental strength, which some people have naturally or some gain with practice.

It's very easy to get tempted and invest lot of time in answers from our favourite area or answers which we attempt first, and later on rush through in the end.

And also ,sometimes in exams we get mental blockade in first one hour (due to exhaustion or resistance) and attempt only 60 marks and later rush through remaining stuff.

People believe they have met demand of questions, written good answers etc etc.

But deep down one has to analyse if you were able to maintain that uniformity and control during exam. This is where many people get stuck in this vicious loop for years together. And this is where a good test series , sincerely attempted can help aspirants.

Ofcourse external factors are always there like optional, luck etc.

Anyways, I myself could never master this.  And even this year ..many papers, i lot that control and balance .

But the sooner one realises this, the sooner one exits this cycle.

Bro one question is consistently troubling me. I did not underline at all. How disastrous can that be if at all it is.

@Akkku I love "Papa John's" pizza and often talk about how nice it is. While there's no "Mama Mia's" pizza in the market, yet some feminists have criticised me for not not picking up gender neutral pizzas like from Domino's or Pizza Hut.

While I had my own prudential reasons for picking Papa John's, the seemingly poignant criticism by my feminist folks has caged me into a stasis of self doubt. Am I some reluctant Patriarch? But I don't feel I'm. Kindly help me escape this oblivion.

"Impediments to the realisation of peace necessarily trace their origin to violence. What needs to be imparted crucial scrutiny is the fact that this violence is never always physical. Sometimes it emerges from a desire to dominate, sometimes it emerges from passion and sometimes from debates that eventually degrade into some argumentative arsenal. Therefore it is always wise to stop and think for a while, where would all this lead us to. What would the consequences of these debates, discussions or argumentative warfares be. And above all, will it enable us to lead our short lives in a better manner or in some complex and subtle ways enrich our discomfort to ways and manners hitherto unseen and unknown."

On the Hizab judgement, I feel people are not differentiating between Burkha and Hizab as seen in image posted in this thread above.

Also for upsc we celebrated how Indian secularism is more inclusive then French and why is it better. In India Hindus too wear tilak and thread on hand etc. Whereas france has strict ban on any religious symbol.

Also in Sabrimala case you are preventing someone else (women) to enter, whereas in Hizab case you want to cover your head and neck.

Further it is true that wrong has been done to Kashmiri pandits. But it should be remembered it is always powerful (in democracy, it is majority) oppressing minority. In Kashmir muslims did wrong to Hindus, but similar is case when muslims killed in Ayodhya 1992 or Sikhs in 1984 or Muslims in Godhara or Brus in Mizoram. Though Kashmiri pandits could not return to their home that is tragic but I think that is due to terrorism (foreign nation sponsored) and because they were relatively affluent community so translocated.

In Albert Camus's words, "Democracy is not rule of majority but protection of minorities."

- public life me jisko jo pehenna pehene

-secularism inclusive hai tabhi to educational institutions mein unformity karna hai.

-france me public life me hi religious symbol allowed nai hai.

-in kashmir, the locales were also involved in killing of pandits. they were brainwashed and whatnot.

"they were relatively affluent so translocated". translocated. are you onto some sasta nasha or what

-irrelevant quote dhundke main bhi daal dunga thoda der se

Ye koi baat karne ka tareeka nahi hua. Talk like peaceful people to peaceful people.

@Agog @Akkku ye puzzle ko Cheryl's birthday kehte he. source wiki

Albert and Bernard just become [sic] friends with Cheryl, and they want to know when her birthday is. Cheryl gives them a list of 10 possible dates:

  • May 15, May 16, May 19
  • June 17, June 18
  • July 14, July 16
  • August 14, August 15, August 17

Cheryl then tells Albert and Bernard separately the month and the day of her birthday respectively.

Albert: I don't know when Cheryl's birthday is, but I know that Bernard doesn't know too. [sic]
Bernard: At first I don't [sic] know when Cheryl's birthday is, but I know now.
Albert: Then I also know when Cheryl's birthday is.
