Recently, I have taken a lot of liking to Reading Yojana. Absolutely loving it. Is anyone experiencing a similar resurgence for the once-abandoned love? :D

Why though? Please elaborate. I am thinking of just doing newspaper and Dipin sir’s class and skipping monthlies altogether. Perhaps I can take up yojana too.

Someone here mentioned rau's daily news analysis on YouTube.

Can anyone quickly review it? Is it worth spending 40 min of my day everyday?

Speed 1.5 or 1.75 or 2.0 depending on how quickly you can follow it. Have a pen in your hand. Some days, the analysis is excellent. Some days, it’s only good enough. But it’s never a waste of your time.

Pro tip: Try listening to Basava Uppin. 10/10 recommend.

Hello Everyone

I am suffering from phobia of Ancient, Medieval and Art and culture.

In 2020 prelims there were around 8 questions from this section and i did not even see those questions in exam because i did not study this portion . I was playing the game with 92 questions only.

According to various coaching answer keys, i might score somewhere between 96-99 marks. And i failed to qualify prelims.

Had i studied this portion i could have solved atleast 3 questions out of 8 which could have taken my score above 102-105 and i might have qualified prelims.

I think ancient, medieval and culture became my achilles heel last year and i don't want this to happen again.

I have tried reading culture and i hated it.

What should i do for this section as after 10th july i will be focussing on prelims.

I have no strong reason to convince you. It is just that when I get bored of reading the usual syllabus, I just read one yojana article. This way, I read 2-3 articles a day, taking a week to finish the magazine. No burden of preparing it or anything, just casual reads. Printed on such top-quality paper and just good vibes only stuff about the work being done, I feel happy! :D

Give 10 days exclusively for this section (July 1 - July 10). Then, your phobia will be over.

I think RS Sharma does not get its due recognition nowadays. From prelims to mains, the book is pretty relevant IMO. Since you mentioned you are not a fresher, you already might be knowing the basics and other stuff regarding history.

My suggestion would be to pick up RS Sharma from 10th July, read one chapter daily, like a before bedtime read.

You'd be done by mid-August. Then, make short notes of it. Will take 2-3 days.

I suggested RS Sharma due to the following reasons-

1) good relevance in mains too.

2) Book is in simple language, in an orderly fashion.

3) Gives a decent understanding of culture as well.

For the remaining portions of History and filling the gaps, OnlyIAS recently released mini booklets on history, approx 40 pages each for ancient and medieval. You may have a look at them too.

It seems to me that you have strong negative feelings associated with this part, which is understandable since you could not prepare it last time but questions came from it. Now this section of syllabus may be making you feel inadequate. I think recognizing these feelings, sitting with them for sometime and trying to understand the reasons behind them will help. Perhaps you think that you are not good at memorizing things and this section involves a lot of memorizing, that is why you are not good at it. But you must have memorized dozens of thing in environment (e.g. national parks), or polity (e.g. articles) etc. Or it may something else. You should try to find it out. I have found that the 5 dimensions of Emotional Intelligence that we read in Ethics do really make sense once you apply them.

@TabsAndChords I did RS Sharma for ancient and Satish Chandra from medieval. Read them once and then made notes and after that just read the notes.
For art and culture, I did Nitin Singhania and the NCERT. Tried to convert it to maps, mindmaps as much as I could.
But i did feel that the effort was more than what the prelims required. I ended up making guesses mostly.
It depends on how much time you want to give it. Others will advise better, but in my opinion, in ancient and medieval for prelims, the most important is: 1. Timelines of rulers 2. Administrative and socio economic characteristics 3. Books, art etc. Reading it from a good source and understanding it will help with the first two. The third one will come from memorisation. So I think if you have time, read it from the textbooks, make notes, and revise only them.
Also there are some compilations which give lists of keywords. Those may come in handy.
