I have seen people with a bit of limited knowledge getting in and some amazing, really hardworking people missing out on the interview call. What did you learn? What would you advise others?

@bevancombhai daily 2 3 question brainstorm karna and daily 4 editorials padhna and making very small 7 8 line notes out of each will help you, notes should be crisp rather than long

What worked for me this time -
- No single format in answers like last year depending on question answring to satiate demands of question, avoiding bluffs
- Completing paper
- Drawing diagrams only when necesary
- Attempting right set of question in essay and optional
- Avoiding superflous flowry language and technical jargon
- Ethics section A quality matters
- Diagrams and flowchart only when apt
@sat_009can you please bit elaborate on your anthropology strategy..like how much of anthro you did before pre and test series if any. Also how you assess this year's anthro papers wrt trends.
@sat_009said inPost mains results, what would be your strategy?:

@sat_009i did exactly the same. Although it was my first mains in 5 attempts, i had good content because of 5 years of cse studies. Because i had decided this to be my last attempt, i had practised optional answer writing post 2018 prelims itself. I had also completed all papers with pretty good content. Only Gs2 performance was not upto the mark. I was getting good marks in optional test series n had written above avg answers in optional. Used to get my copies evaluated by an IRS frequently. GS3 also i had done well because that paper was always my strong area. Had used apt diagrams wherever necessary in all papers. Since i write philosophical answers well i had written good answers in ethics. had used many real life examples also.I was very much sure of getting an interview call at least. Now I'm clueless. I was surprised for having attempted mains so well.
I'm left with one last attempt now. I'm scared to take risk for another 8 months from now. My biggest question to myself is that if i am unable to clear mains with such a good attempt, will i able to clear it next time.. I'm already 28 n shouldn't waste 8 more months on exam which is so uncertain. I'm totally confused.
I would take some time and take a call to attempt 2020 or not.
Can anyone tell me what may have gone wrong? Essay is one area because we can't expect the expected marks.
@NadigVinayBro... If I was in your situation, I would definitely join the job and try to maximise the career prospects in that job with a vision to do something big in this arena. If at all i feel i should give one more try, i will give last shot but only after 2020 that too very casually without loosing track of job or business prospects. Few of my friends who have cleared this exam told that the confidence the parallel job gives them induce their animal spirits to optimise their answers innovatively , but not as a singular aim without having job simultaneously during mains too.
I am eager for Sat 009 sir's answer too for your question, but just my take . it can be handwriting and legibility, articulation with respect to your answers especially first 5 answers of all your answer scripts, Intro and conclusion maturity, Answer precisiveness, Interlinkages between point sections, underlining and boxing, use of self life examples in ethics(good thing), optimum use of quotes in essay and ethics. you may have done many of these, but just brainstorm with your 3- 4 CSE friends at a time all together after remembering the structure of answer you would have probably written in september.
Just take some time given the rumour today of less than 700 seats in 2020 cse and you have exhausted 5 attempts.I really wish you All the Best sir. I'm sure you can crack this cookieJust go on with life as if you are not going to clear this exam sir. Bigger prospects are there than this exam. Who knows you may become CSE 2021 topper within 50's rank .
@sat_009congrats and all the best satya sir.
@NadigVinayif u want me to guess it will be difficult but essay and gs 2 hi hoga culprit most likely,
But only 1 thing upsc is unpredictable,
As you have only one attempt left plz avoid thinking twice,
De dalo yar kuch kharab nahi hoga bus second thought backup kuch mat socho coz even a slight mismangment will lead to less chances of selection even next year
@Phagocytebhai apka gs ka hi issue hai sayad
Out with anthro . 3rd mains. Been to interview previous time (cleared with less than 5 marks). Felt in exam itself that I didn't do any improvement than previous year. So assuming border case miss. Even during exam, there is some sort of rigidity and no free flow of ideas while writing(which used to be there in test series papers). Dont know why. I expected i'll clear marginally this time also and thought could try my chances in interview. Didn't happen. I came to terms with my results
There are only 2 options I can see.
8 months solidly present. Change my answer writing approach. There is something seriously wrong with my GS because i'm consistently scoring low across papers. Need to unlearn everything and start like a fresher with that. Writing is my weakness all through. May be then I can bring some freshness. Cant afford to expect success while doing same mistakes. But feeling its my best time to bring any change
Second option is to try and take up a job. Had a career gap of 3.5 years with 2 years previous work ex. Few colleagues said they can help with referrals. So started preparing for those interviews. Then see if I can prepare with job or skip this attempt and give an attempt in 2021 or fill IFS only this time and continue later( all that other scenarios).
In dilemma. One side there is strong feeling to finish whatever I started somehow and other side , wanted to play safe from here on, seeing all the uncertainty surrounding this exam.
Anyone who went through this phase , please do share your experience. Will be immensely helpful in taking decisions
@ROCKYTHESULTANThank you very much. I'll definitely consider your suggestions before taking a decisionGood luck to you too bro !

Thank you dude. That's quite a food for my thinking process now. About backup, I'm not worried a lot now as i have 3+ years experience in IT and by mains 2020, I would have 1.4 years of gap which is okay i feel. Just thinking if I can really recoup myself for 7th year now after 6years of mental fatigue and still give my best. will decide soon.

check my comment. it might help you.
@Valar_morghulisAlmost in the same situation as yours but I appeared in interviews 1 year before yours and cleared mains with a margin of 38 marks;could not clear pre in 2018 and this time in 2019 flunked in mains;Dont know where it went wrong; I had improved content wise across all papers;
Sometimes I think it is Anthro; But next time I think It must be GS only; it is all just speculation...It was 4th attempt and any improvement can be made only after seeing the marksheet, though an aspirant can keep working hard across all dimensions; So quite undedided whether to appear this year or skip this attempt because it is very difficult to gauge where one must have missed given unpredictability of UPSC.
@Valar_morghulisi had 2 years work experience as a full stack developer (1.5 full time + 0.5 internship) n found getting an interview opportunity in MNCs(IT field) extremely difficult with 2years 7months gap despite having impressive resume( my gap touched 2y 10m during job hunt which few recruiters considered 3 while interviewing me). Didn't want to join startup as it'll have hectic work hours n wouldn't be able to study for CSE. I really believe having 4-4.5 years of technical gap ( if u decide to attempt full time again) with just 2 years experience is going to be difficult to get interview calls from good MNCs if u don't have contacts in multiple companies. Again, it's just my opinion n I'm sharing Only what i have experienced. I'm not demotivating you , my only suggestion to you is to please think realistically and take a decision.
