[Results] Prelims 2020 Over - Gearing for 2021

Because of the corona virus issue? If it does not happen then worst affected will be people whose interview is stuck, around 600-700 such people I think are yet to appear for their interview.

@neyawn sir and others, what is your take?

This is the official Thread for discussion of Prelims Postponement, Please do not create new threads for the same.

@MarcusA They will postpone too eventually. And in case of NEET and JEE if something happens to any kid on account of appearing for the exam the furore that will be raised will be humongous.

had that been the case then universities +jee +neet would not have announced their dates....everyone is realising that we have to live with it...also 70 % of cases are asymptomatic( 70% chances that we are also affected) that doesn't mean that everyone will isolate themselves....  show must go on.

Civil services exams are not like those of CBSE and JEE. These exams can be conducted in every district, in every school, whether private or public. These are necessary to be conducted for starting the next session in colleges.

@Naadan_Parinda upsc has aready discarded online proposal...also they have hinted towards holding exam this year only... ..also prelim is a 1-day affair ,if university exams can happen then this can too ....and  where will the buck stop...people are talking about 2nd wave , god forbid if there is a 3rd wave, would that mean permanent delay ? oc not ..govt has already realised that lockdown is not the solution  . by end of this month flights will start too...
brace for prelims announcement by next month.

It is not about losing a few bucks here and there. It is about lives. Gatherings like these could risk lives of thousands of individuals. Imagine people flocking to exam centres in Mumbai, Ahmedabad in July or August. Even if the rate of spread may decrease by then, such gathering could cause future waves in hotspot regions.  Aur bhai show nhi hai life hai. Band kamare mein upsc ki taiyari ke sage bhi duniiya hai.

Also sarkari naukri ki taiyari ke alawa bhi log hai. Any such wave in any city could lead to future lockdowns, ie. even more people getting unemployed. I personally think govt should avoid large gatherings till we reach Kerala level stability.

A July date, most probably in 2nd half. All states are following a unique trajectory and will peak accordingly. Key cities like Mumbai Ahmedabad are under severe stress and in Bengal I don't think even the tip of the virus spread has been exposed. We can hope for normalcy by sometime around 2nd half of June, optimistically. Rural areas have been well guarded till now but prelims will require a number of candidates from rural areas to travel to urban centres (cue- Mumbai Ahmedabad etc for which there are no alternatives as of now) now unless such epicentres are totally secured, no authority can risk spreading the virus to rural areas by conducting Prelims ( unless they decide to put candidates in mandatory quarantine for a fortnight 😜, goodluck with that).

So July should be the earliest we can hope for, in my opinion

July end/ August start is very much feasible if the infection spread is slowed down significantly. Otherwise what we will see is future extension and newer dates. No govt would take risk of organizing such huge exams in middle of pandemic. They are not even offering (huge chunks of) laborers train-ride back home. I highly doubt they will allow exams of such scale to be conducted where so many rural juntas come to cities to write exams.

So it all depends if the govt will be able to manage the spread and not just the rate of spread. Cuz Covid is real, hospital beds already filling up in Mumbai is real and sufferings that corona brings are real.

When will the interviews resume? It's logical that UPSC's priority would be to close the 2019 cycle before 2020 prelims.

Buck stops with the government. If I get sick due to a government held exam or worse still, my 92 year old grandpa gets sick because of me, I'll be calling my lawyers. And yes, waves make all the difference. 3rd wave won't come until next year and after vaccines come out I don't care how many waves corona comes in, we can have exams and reopen the economy fully. Until then don't ask people "to live with it." It is like condemning our elderly population to their graves. This argument reminds me of that stupid Florida kid on the beach who said " If I get corona, I get corona. At the end of the day, I'll not let it stop from living my life." We need to start acting more responsibly.

@K_9 lol...so you would appear for an exam and then crib  that i got sick due to appearing in it..
btw there was no vaccine of Spanish flu till 1940 . (22years and 2 world wars) people literally learnt to live with it.
good luck with your vaccine wait

btw it presumptuous of you to assume that holding an exam would certainly spread corona when the no of appearing student would be far less than the total no of people queuing up outside the alcohol shops /or those travelling by trains now.

Why are you comparing this with spanish flu? It killed 17-50 million people. So we should not complain if Corona kills 10 million people now? Because what happened in the past, we should be ready to accept what is happening now?

And it is not presumptious to conclude that a large gathering could trigger transmission rates, it is logical. You wouldn't know the consequences of people gathering in front of alcohol shops or those travelling by trains until later. Watch how in two weeks time India reports a million infected and 3000 deaths daily. It will happen. A football match of 40000 gathering is said to be the powderkeg that kickstarted rapid transmissions in Lombardy, Italy and Valencia, Spain. Read up.
