A Constitution represents the whole of the people and not any one section. This brings different group together under a common identity provided for by the constitution.

Constitution expresses the fundamental identity of people:

  1. People form a collective identity by agreeing to a basic set of norms on how one should be governed and who should be given the power to govern.
  2. This collective identity takes the form of a political identity as the constitution provides for various laws and regulations.
  3. Identities existing prior to the constitution: People from different identities agree to come under the identity of their constitution. For example, people from various ethnicities, religions and culture form Indian National identity under a single India Constitution
  4. Constitutional norms are the overarching framework within which one pursues individual aspirations, goals and freedoms.
  5. The constitution sets authoritative constraints upon what one may or may not do. This guides the behaviour of individuals as well as groups. This creates a moral identity.

Therefore, constitution plays an important role in creating and maintaining a national identity. It brings together various societies and cultures to form a nation.
