News: The standing committee of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) has decided to defer its nod to a Vedanta subsidiary’s proposal for oil exploration in the habitat of the endangered Hoolock Gibbon in Assam’s Dessoi reserve forest.
1. National Board for Wildlife (NBWL): It is highest body for conservation of wildlife and biodiversity in India.
2. It is a statutory body established under the provisions of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
3. The board has 47 members including the Prime Minister, who is the chairperson.
4. It advises the central government regarding the measures to be adopted for conservation of wildlife. Its recommendations are not binding on the government.
5. Hoolock Gibbon: It is the only ape species to be found in India.
6. They are shy, arboreal animals that are largely concentrated in Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary in Assam.
7. Two main species include: The Western Hoolock Gibbon and the Eastern Hoolock Gibbon.
8. IUCN Status: Western Hoolock Gibbon is Endangered while Eastern Hoolock Gibbon is Vulnerable.
