News: Automakers are gearing up to launch a range of flex fuel vehicles from this year end as the government is aggressively promoting biofuels to cut emissions and reduce the country’s dependence on costly oil imports.

1. Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFV): They have an internal combustion engine which is designed to run on more than one type of fuel, typically a combination of gasoline and an alternative fuel such as ethanol or methanol.

2. Some of the benefits of flex fuel vehicles include: A) Greater Environmental Sustainability, B) Reduction of Oil Imports C) Higher Income for Farmers.

3. To promote flex fuel vehicles, Indian Government has included flex fuel engines and four related components as Advanced Automotive Technology Components in the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme.

4. Biofuels: They are renewable energy sources made from organic materials such as plants and animals waste.

5. India has launched the National Policy on Biofuel, 2018 to encourage the production of biofuel.

6. There are 4 generations of biofuel: First Generation Biofuels are derived from consumable food items, Second Generation Biofuels are derived from non-food feedstocks, Third Generation Biofuels are produced from algae, Fourth Generation Biofuels are produced using genetic engineering.
