By extension: NRC for Tripura

News:

  1. Supreme Court to hear petition for National Register of Citizens for Tripura.

Important News:

  1. Group of activist from Tripura has filed a petition on Supreme Court seeking a process to identify illegal migrants and deport them from the State.
  2. Why demand for NRC in Tripura:
  • Due to heavy influx of illegal migrants amounted to “external aggression” from Bangladesh.
  • Illegal migrants turned the tribal people into a minority in their own native land.
  • Over the last three decades, multiple insurgent groups have ended violent struggles.
  • After years of struggle, the tribal people of the State had gained special autonomy provisions, such as the institution of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council and recognition of their spoken language, among other assurances.
  • However, the empowerment of the council and the protection of tribal rights have steadily eroded since then.
  1. 1993 tripartite accord signed by the Government of India with the All Tripura Tribal Force asked for the repatriation of all Bangladeshi nationals who had come to Tripura after March 25, 1971 without valid documents authorizing their presence in the State.
  2. Much of the migration into Tripura occurred before the creation of Bangladesh and how the deportation process would take place is not yet clear.
  3. But the demand for bureaucratic exercise without considering its deep humanitarian impact will only create new fault lines especially in a State like Tripura where there is no such clarity of views on the NRC process.
