Analog cable TV gets an extension

News:

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) extended the deadline for migration of broadcasting and cable services from analog cable connections to digital set top box connections till 31 Jan 2019

Facts:

• According to TRAI, the new framework comprised of the Telecommunication (Broadcasting and Cable) Services Tariff Order of 2017, The Interconnection Regulations of 2017 and the Quality of Service Regulations of 2017
• The Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Amendment Act, 2011 had mandated a switch-over of the existing analogue cable TV networks to digital addressable system (DAS) in four phases.
• However, certain multi-system operators (MSOs) and cable operators had moved various high courts and obtained either extension of the deadline or stay on the ministry orders

Difference between Analog and Digital transmission

• Analog Transmission
  • The big difference between Analog and Digital is how the signal is transmitted from the source to the TV in your home.
  • Analog TV’s transmit audio and video signals over the airwaves in a manner similar to a radio signal.
  • Like radio signals, an analog TV signal can experience interference with their frequencies. This can cause static, snow, or ghosting on a channel. It can also cause fluctuations in color, brightness, and sound quality. And like a radio signals, analog transmission declines the further away you are from the source.
• Digital Transmission:
  • A Digital TV signal, transmits in “packets” of compressed data. The data uses a combination of 1’s and 0’s, similar to your computer, DVD player, and Internet.
  • Digital signals do not experience the same interference, or signal loss, that analog TV signals do
  • A digital transmission requires less bandwidth when compared to a similar Analog signal.
  • This allows a television station to broadcast more channels and more HD channels over the same airwaves, giving you more variety of programming with better quality
