Source-This post on Canada’s Parliamentary report named India as second-biggest foreign threat to the Canadian democracy has been created based on the article “India is now ‘second-biggest foreign threat’ to Canadian democracy, says report” published in “The Hindu” on 7 June 2024.

Why in News?

A parliamentary committee report in Canada has named India as the second-biggest foreign threat to the country’s democracy. The report was issued by the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians.

About Report Findings:

1. The report states that India’s alleged interference in Canadian democratic processes and institutions has been increasing.

2. This interference includes targeting Canadian politicians, ethnic media, and Indo-Canadian ethnocultural communities. The operation has expanded beyond countering pro-Khalistani efforts in Canada.

3. The report has worsened already strained bilateral relations between India and Canada. Tensions escalated following the June 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a pro-Khalistan ideologue, in Surrey, British Columbia.

4. The report identifies China as the top foreign threat to Canada’s democracy, ahead of India.
