NITI Aayog had first launched the Composite Water Management Index(CWMI) in 2018 as a tool to instil a sense of cooperative and competitive federalism among the states
The index provides useful information for the states and also for the concerned central ministries/departments enabling them to formulate and implement suitable strategies for better management of water resources.
The index consists of 9 key themes, which are
Restoration of Water Bodies
Groundwater
Major and Medium Irrigation
Watershed Development
Participatory Irrigation Practices
Sustainable on-form Water Use Practices
Rural Drinking Water
Urban Water Supply and Sanitation
Policy and Governance.
