- NITI Aayog had first launched the Composite Water Management Index(CWMI) in 2018 as a tool to instil a sense of cooperative and competitive federalism among the states
- The index provides useful information for the states and also for the concerned central ministries/departments enabling them to formulate and implement suitable strategies for better management of water resources.
- The index consists of 9 key themes, which are
- Restoration of Water Bodies
- Groundwater
- Major and Medium Irrigation
- Watershed Development
- Participatory Irrigation Practices
- Sustainable on-form Water Use Practices
- Rural Drinking Water
- Urban Water Supply and Sanitation
- Policy and Governance.
