News: There is a need for better weather forecasting in India to tackle climate hazards. Recently, government took a step in this direction by launching Mission Mausam. It requires improvements like expanding radar coverage, open availability of weather data.
1. Mission Mausam: It is a multi-faceted and transformative initiate that seeks to enhance country’s weather and climate observations, understanding, modelling and forecasting.
2. It has been allocated a budgetary outlay of 2000 crore over two years.
3. The mission is expected to benefit numerous sectors like agriculture, disaster management, aviation, defence, water resources etc.
4. The mission will be implemented by three institutes under the Ministry of Earth Sciences: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorological (IITM) and The National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF),
5. Radar: It stands for radio detection and ranging. It functions by utilising radio waves to detect and locate the objects, measure their distance, speed, and direction.
6. Doppler Radar: Also known as weather radar, it utilises doppler effect to measure the velocity of objects, particularly in motion. It is often used to monitor weather conditions, anticipate new wind patterns, formation of storms etc.
