General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT) was a legal agreement whose aim was to reduce barriers in international trade. It was signed on 30th October, 1947.

This was done through the elimination or reduction of quotas, tariffs, subsidies etc. It eventually paved way for the creation of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on January 1,1995.
