Post SC judgement, LGBTQI community now in search of inclusive shelters

  1. A recent study titled “Survivor speak – call for action from five states” has highlighted that lesbians and trans-women from the LGBTQI community look forward for inclusive and special shelters. The study was conducted in Delhi, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Meghalaya by different voluntary organisations under the banner of Lam- Lynti Chittara Neralu (LCN)
  2. There has been a rise in demand for shelters among LGBTQI community who had faced opposition and societal discrimination after coming out open about their homosexuality post Supreme Court Judgement.
  3. In September 2018, the Supreme Court had decriminalised same-sex relationships in India by partially striking down the provisions of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Section 377 criminalised voluntary carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal. Though the law did not explicitly mention LGBTQI community, the phrase “against the order of nature” came to be referred for same-sex sexual relations.
