Why in the News?
Semal trees in Rajasthan are facing extinction because of Udaipur’s Holi festivities. Traditionally, the stripped stems or branches of semal trees serve as the central pillars for the bonfires during the Holika Dahan.
Semal Trees in Rajasthan
1. Semal trees, also known as silk cotton trees, are being depleted in Rajasthan, particularly due to their use in Holi celebrations in Udaipur.
2. Large quantities of semal trees are cut in south Rajasthan and sold in Udaipur for Holi festivities, violating the Rajasthan Forest Act 1953 and the Forest (Conservation) Act 1980. Once abundant, the crimson semal flower has become a rare sight in the region due to extensive cutting.
3. The semal tree offers various benefits and uses beyond its decorative appeal:
i) Medicinal Properties: Its bark, leaves, and seeds are utilized in traditional medicine to treat ailments like fever, diarrhoea, and skin conditions. It’s also used as a natural remedy for wounds and cuts.
ii) Timber: Semal wood is sturdy and durable, and is commonly employed in construction, furniture-making, and other woodworking tasks.
iii) Landscaping: Due to its attractive appearance and rapid growth, the semal tree is frequently planted as a street tree or in parks and gardens.
iv) Fiber: The semal tree provides a valuable source of fiber, often used for stuffing pillows due to its cotton-like substance.
v) Cultural and Spiritual Significance: In various cultures, the semal tree holds sacred significance, intertwined with spiritual or religious beliefs.
Ecosystem Role of Semal Trees
1. Ecological Importance: Semal trees play a vital role in the forest ecosystem, providing habitat and resources for various species, including animals, insects, and tribal communities.
2. Diverse Uses: Apart from ecological benefits, semal trees serve multiple purposes for tribal communities, including food, fodder, and fuel wood, as well as for crafting musical instruments and utensils.
3. Soil Stabilization: With its extensive and deep roots, the semal tree effectively stabilizes soil and helps prevent erosion.
