News: The article discusses the recent elections in the Maldives, where the People’s National Congress, led by President Mohamed Muizzu, won a majority. Muizzu’s anti-India stance and growing pro-China sentiment pose a challenge to India’s influence in the region.

What happened in the Maldives election?

In the Maldives election, President Mohamed Muizzu’s party, the People’s National Congress (PNC), achieved a landslide victory.

The PNC secured 70 out of 93 seats in Parliament, a significant majority.

The previous majority holder, the Maldives Democratic Party, saw a reduction to only 15 seats.

This shift also affected traditionally progressive areas like parts of the capital, Male, which supported the PNC despite its Islamic traditionalism.

New parties formed by former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Abdulla Yameen failed to gain significant traction or seats.
