  • Japan-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise – Jimex 2022

    What is the News?

    The sixth edition of Japan India Maritime Exercise 2022 (JIMEX 22) hosted by the Indian Navy commenced in the Bay of Bengal.

    What is Exercise JIMEX?

    It is an annual maritime exercise between India and Japan.

    Aim: To consolidate the high degree of interoperability that exists between maritime forces of the two countries, through complex exercises in the surface, sub-surface and air domains.

    Phases: JIMEX 22 involves two Phases; exercises at sea and a harbour phase at Visakhapatnam.

    Significance: This edition marks the 10th anniversary of JIMEX, which began in Japan in 2012. It also coincides with the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Japan.

    What are the other exercises between India and Japan?

    Exercise DHARMA GUARDIAN- It is an annual joint military exercise between India and Japan from 2018.

    SHINYUU Maitri– It is a joint exercise between the Indian Air Force and the Japanese Air Self Defence Force (JASDF).

  • India & UK conducts Counter Ransomware Exercise for 26 Nations

    What is the News?

    India’s National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) and the UK Government in collaboration with BAE Systems has successfully conducted the virtual Cyber Exercise on Ransomware Resilience for 26 Countries.

    About Virtual Cyber Exercise on Ransomware Resilience

    Conducted by: India’s National Security Council Secretariat(NSCS) and the UK Government in collaboration with BAE Systems 

    Part of: The exercise has been conducted as part of the International Counter Ransomware Initiative- Resilience Working Group which is being led by India under the leadership of the National Cyber Security Coordinator(NCSC).

    Aim of the exercise: To allow participating countries to test their capability to respond to a major ransomware incident and to demonstrate the benefit of sharing information and collaborating during a major cyber incident.

    Participating countries: Around 26 countries and their respective organizations participated in the exercise.

    Theme of the exercise: It is based on the Energy Sector in which the respective National Cyber Crisis Management Teams of the participating nations will have to deal with a ransomware attack on multiple electricity distribution companies. 

  • Vostok-2022 commences in Russia with India, China participating

    An Indian Army contingent comprising troops from Gorkha Rifles is participating in the multilateral strategic and command exercise ‘Vostok-2022’ in Russia.

    What is Exercise Vostok?

    It is a multilateral strategic and command exercise hosted by Russia.

    Aim: To deepen practical and friendly cooperation with the armies of participating countries, enhance the level of strategic collaboration among the participating parties and strengthen the ability to respond to various security threats.

    Participating countries: India, China, Belarus, Mongolia, Tajikistan and other countries are participating in the exercise.

  • Exercise Vajra Prahar: India, US joint special forces exercise concludes in Himachal Pradesh

    What is the News?

    The 13th edition of India-USA Joint Special Forces Exercise VAJRA PRAHAR 2022 culminated at Bakloh in Himachal Pradesh.

    What is Exercise VAJRA PRAHAR?

    Exercise Vajra Prahar is a Special Forces joint military training exercise between India and US. 

    Aim: To share the best practices and experiences in areas such as joint mission planning and operational tactics as also to improve interoperability between the Special Forces of both nations.

    The exercise takes place alternately in India and the US since 2010.

    What are the other exercises between India and the US?

    Yudh Abhyas: Military exercise.

    Tiger Triumph: Tri-service military exercise.

    Cope India: Bilateral Air Force exercise.

  • Vietnam-India Bilateral Army Exercise Vinbax 2022 Concludes at Chandimandir

    What is the News?

    Vietnam-India Bilateral Army Exercise VINBAX 2022 concluded at Chandimandir, Haryana.

    What is VINBAX 2022?

    It is a bilateral military exercise between India and Vietnam.

    Theme of the exercise: “E​​mployment and deployment of an Engineer Company and a Medical Team as part of United Nations Contingent for Peacekeeping Operations”. 

    Significance of the exercise: This is the first time ever that the Vietnam People’s Army(VPA) was undertaking a Field Training Exercise with any foreign Army. The fact that Vietnam chose India for this speaks volumes about the value the two countries place on their mutual relationship.

  • India, Malaysia begin four-day air exercise Udarashakti

    What is the News?

    An Indian Air Force (IAF) contingent has left for Malaysia to participate in a bilateral exercise ‘Udarashakti’ with the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).

    What is Exercise Udarashakti?

    It is a bilateral air force exercise between India and Malaysia.

    Purpose: The exercise will give a chance to both countries to share and learn best practices and an opportunity for both to discuss mutual combat capabilities.

    – The exercise will witness different aerial combat exercises between the two air forces to augment security in the region and to help in strengthening defense cooperation between the two countries.

    Exercise Harimau Shakti: It is a bilateral joint military exercise between India and Malaysia.

  • India begins cooperation with Bahrain-based Combined Maritime Forces

    What is the News?

    India has formally commenced cooperation with the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF). However, the modalities of the exact nature of cooperation are being worked out.

    Note: At the India-US 2+2 Ministerial dialogue in April 2022, India announced that it would join the CMF as an Associate Partner.

    What is Combined Maritime Forces(CMF)?

    Established in: 2001

    Purpose: It is a multinational naval partnership to promote security, stability and prosperity across approximately 3.2 million square miles of international waters, which encompass some of the world’s most important shipping lanes.

    Located in: Bahrain

    Commanded by: U.S. Navy Vice Admiral

    Members: It consists of 34 member nations. Including countries such as Australia, Bahrain, Brazil, France, Japan, Pakistan, United States, Yemen, and others.

    Task Forces: It comprises of three task forces: CTF 150 (maritime security and counter-terrorism), CTF 151 (counter piracy) and CTF 152 (Arabian Gulf security and cooperation).

    Note: This is a flexible organization and members are not bound by either a political or military mandate. 

    India and CMF Cooperation: India has in the past cooperated with CMF on various occasions. For instance, the CMF’s CTF 151 has coordinated with Indian and Chinese warships deployed on anti-piracy duties to patrol the Maritime Security Transit Corridor.

    – Moreover, the Indian Navy has a Liaison Officer posted at the US Central Command (CENTCOM) in Bahrain who will also function as the point person for cooperation with the CMF.

    What is the News?

    China has begun its live-fire exercise near Taiwan by launching at least 11 ballistic missiles into the country’s coast. This is being done after the US House speaker visited Taiwan.

    What are Live-fire exercises?

    They are exercises primarily used by military personnel in which live ammunition is used to create training conditions that are as close to real combat scenarios as possible. 

    During live-fire training, soldiers are placed in simulated combat situations and are given the opportunity to use their weapons and equipment (like ships, aircraft, tanks and drones). 

    Such exercises are invaluable in maintaining the combat readiness of troops, the cohesiveness of units, and instilling confidence in their ability to use their weapons and equipment correctly.

    The exercises also involve testing the effectiveness of vehicles, weapon platforms and weapons systems so that any design flaws can be resolved before the weapons are fully operational.

    What is the News?

    India and the US will hold the 18th edition of the Exercise “Yudh Abhyas” in Uttarakhand’s Auli.

    What is Exercise Yudh Abhyas?

    It is a military exercise between India and the US.

    Aim: To enhance understanding, cooperation and interoperability between the armies of India and the US with a number of complex drills being planned.

    Started in: The exercise was started in 2004 under the US Army Pacific Partnership Program.

    The exercise is hosted alternately between both countries.

    What are the other exercises between India and the US?

    Exercise Tiger Triumph– It is a tri-service military exercise between India and the US.

    Exercise Vajra Prahar: It is a Special Forces joint military training exercise. It has been conducted alternately in India and the US since 2010.

    Exercise Cope India: It is a series of bilateral Air Force exercises between India and the United States.

    Defence Cooperation between India and US

    Relations between India and US have improved since 2016 when the US designated India a “Major Defence Partner”.

    Since 2016 the two countries have signed many major defence and security pacts such as LEMOA, BECA and COMCASA.

    What is the News?

    Indian Air Force(IAF) will be participating in Exercise Pitch Black.

    What is Exercise Pitch Black?

    Exercise Pitch Black is a biennial exercise hosted by the Australian Air Force.

    Aim: To practice Offensive Counter Air(OCA) and Defensive Counter Air(DCA) combat in a simulated war environment.

    Participating countries: The participating countries are Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, India, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, UAE, U.K and U.S.

    Other Exercises between India and Australia

    AUSINDEX: It is a biennial bilateral maritime exercise between the Indian Navy and Royal Australian Navy(RAN). The first edition of the exercise took place in 2015.
