News: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister urged the Central Government to explore the possibility of running green hydrogen powered trains on the Kalka-Shimla narrow-gauge railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

1. Green hydrogen is produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen (electrolysis) using renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar, or hydropower.

2. It is colourless, tasteless, odourless, non-toxic, and highly combustible gaseous substance.

3. Advantages of green hydrogen include: A) Reduced greenhouse gas emissions B) Energy security C) Carbon free fuel for transport D) Energy storage

4. Challenges associated with green hydrogen usage are high cost, infrastructural gaps, safety concerns, low public acceptance etc.

5. The central government has launched National Green Hydrogen Mission to make India a global hub in the production, use, and export of green hydrogen.
