India re-elected to head solar alliance

News: India and France have been re-elected as president and co-president respectively of the International Solar Alliance (ISA). India would hold the presidency till 2026.

1. International Solar Alliance is an intergovernmental organisation that brings together countries with high solar potential to collaborate on harnessing solar power as a clean, affordable and sustainable energy source.

2. It was jointly announced by Indian and France in 2015 at the UN Paris Climate Change Conference. While the ISA Framework Agreement came into force in 2017.

3. All UN member states are eligible for its membership. Currently, there are over 120 member countries.

4. ISA majorly focuses on financing solar projects, fostering technological collaboration, capacity building and knowledge sharing, ensuring energy security and facilitating energy transition in its member countries.

5. ISA is guided by ‘Towards 1000’ strategy which aims to mobilise USD 1000 billion of investments in solar energy solutions by 2030, among other things.

6. Its governance structure includes: A) ISA Assembly B) Standing and Regional Committees C) Secretariat.

7. Its Secretariat is in Gurugram, Haryana.
