News: Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises has said that about 2.85 lakh buyers of electric/hybrid vehicles have been supported by a subsidy of Rs 360 crore under the FAME India Scheme.

About Fame India Scheme

  • Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India) Scheme was launched in 2015. It is implemented by Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises
  • It aims to support hybrid/electric vehicles market development and Manufacturing ecosystem.
  • The main objectives of the scheme are a) encourage faster adoption of Electric and hybrid vehicle by way of offering upfront Incentive on purchase of Electric vehicles and b) establish necessary charging Infrastructure for electric vehicles.
  • The 1st Phase of FAME India Scheme was implemented through four focus areas namely (i) Demand Creation, (ii) Technology Platform, (iii) Pilot Project and (iv) Charging Infrastructure.
  • The phase I of the scheme continued up to 31st March 2019. The second phase of FAME India Scheme has commenced from 01st April, 2019 for a period of 3 years
  • The FAME scheme is part of the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) which aims to achieve national fuel security by promoting hybrid and electric vehicles in the country.

FAME II:

  • The FAME II scheme puts emphasis on electrification of public transportation that includes shared transport. Demand Incentives on operational expenditure model for electric buses is delivered through State or city Transport Corporation.
  • In 3W and 4W segment incentives are applicable mainly to vehicles used for public transport or registered for commercial purposes. While, in the case of the e-2Ws segment, the emphasis is on the private vehicles.
  • The benefits of incentives, are extended to only those vehicles which are fitted with advanced battery like a Lithium Ion battery and other new technology batteries.
  • Under the phase, charging stations would be established in metros, other million plus cities, smart cities and cities of Hilly states and major highways connecting major city clusters
