News: A laboratory worker died in Siberia, raising concerns over pneumonic plague caused by Yersinia pestis and prompting quarantine of contacts.
About Yersinia pestis

- Yersinia pestis is a tiny bacterium that causes a dangerous sickness called the plague.
- It is a zoonotic bacterium usually found in small mammals and their fleas.
About Plague
- Types: Plague has three main forms:
- bubonic plague, which affects the lymph nodes;
- pneumonic plague, which affects the lungs; and
- septicaemic plague, in which the bacteria multiply in the bloodstream.
- Bubonic plague is the most common form, while pneumonic and septicaemic plague are more severe forms.
- Symptoms: Symptoms include fever, chills, body aches and weakness.
- They may also include painful swollen lymph nodes, coughing, breathing difficulty, bleeding under the skin and tissue damage.
- Transmission: Plague spreads through the bite of infected fleas and direct contact with infected tissues or bodily fluids.
- Pneumonic plague can also spread through infected respiratory particles.
- Life Cycle: In bubonic plague, Y. pestis enters the body through a flea bite and reaches nearby lymph nodes through the lymphatic system.
- It can later spread to the lungs or bloodstream, causing pneumonic or septicaemic plague.
- Treatment: Antibiotics and supportive therapy are effective when treatment begins early.
- Untreated pneumonic plague can become rapidly fatal.
- Prevention: Prevention includes avoiding flea bites, animal carcasses, infected tissues and fluids, and taking precautions while handling infected patients.
