“Rousseau’s political philosophy contains the seeds of Socialism, Absolutism and Democracy.” Comment. [IAS Mains 2004, 20 Marks]
Hints: Rousseau’s political philosophy rests on the concept of General Will, which prevails over the individual will. This is a reflection of Absolutism. Rousseau also makes the people as the sovereign and advocates direct participation of the people in governance – a clear mark of Democracy.
Further, Rousseau states that as private property is invented, the labor needed for human survival is divided among different individuals. This implies that the property owners and non-laborers would dominate and exploit the poor.
The poor would naturally seek war against the rich to end this unfair domination. From this perspective, Rousseau plants the seeds of Socialism.
