River ranching programme
Note– River ranching is a form of aquaculture in which a population of a fish species is held in captivity for the first stage of their lives, then released, and later harvested as adults.
About– It is introduced as special activity under PMMSY (Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana) scheme.
- Department of Fisheries has designated National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Hyderabad as the Nodal Agency.
- This program is under Central Sector component of PMMSY for implementing River Ranching across the Country.
Objectives
The key objectives of the component are:
- To sustain and conserve the biodiversity in the river.
- Facilitate regular stocking of fingerlings of cultivable carps to enhance productivity.
- Increase fish production.
- Enhance income and livelihood opportunities to communities’ dependent on these
resources.
Implementation period:
The scheme is implemented for a period of 2 years from FY 2020 -2021 to FY 2021-2022.
Project area:
The Phase-I of programme (2020-21) is implemented in 3 river basins of the country namely (a)Ganges and its tributaries (b)Brahmaputra & Barak river tributaries (c) Mahanadi & other rivers.
- It covers 8 States namely UP, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Assam, and Tripura.
